Virus hi ginko! I wanted to know of a suggestion for fixing a computer problem of mine, I recently got the internet(used to have but got re-installed) and I have broadband cable internet and these annoying pop ups come onto my screen saying...fix resgistry and such, sending/giving the name of other websites to go to to fix registry problems...keep in mind my brother informed me I probably have experienced an attack and have a virus and NOT to goto these address' they are bogus and probably would crash the computer, the thing is I put spybot in, then malware and some other protective software, and some actual "registry" applications to run the pops are getting less frequent but what would you suggest? my running speed internet and otherwise has decreased and the preformance of my PC is lacking, what it used to be what can we do to correct some things? thanks, sboss

Yes, the pop ups telling you "your computer is infected" "download registry cleaner" etc. usually come from malaware.
The best automated cleaner is still spybot, you can download it here The home of Spybot-S&D! or here Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 - Free software downloads and ...
If Spybot cannot delete the viruses/malaware, then the choice is between locating the registry entries, infected files and corrupted settings one by one, using regedit and HijackThis , and reinstalling Windows.

Unless you are an expert Windows troubleshooter (or you can get one) I suggest backing up all your data and reinstalling windows on a new folder, if not formatting the HD completely.

Spybot is not a resident antivirus, after cleaning , if you do not have any other antivirus software, you can download this one for free
AVG Free - Download antivirus
Good luck

Hi,

I suggest you check that your anti-virus is up-to-date and working. If you don't have an anti-virus, I suggest you get one, preferably the commercial versions as contrasted to the free internet versions.

When this is done, give your computer a full system scan for viruses. Let me know afterwards.

Regards.

Virus Guide: 11 things you should know

What is a computer virus --> Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.
A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your e-mail program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk.
Computer viruses are often spread by attachments in e-mail messages or instant messaging messages. That is why it is essential that you never open e-mail attachments unless you know who it's from and you are expecting it.
Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.
Computer viruses also spread through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in illicit software or other files or programs you might download.
To help avoid computer viruses, it's essential that you keep your computer current with the latest updates and antivirus tools, stay informed about recent threats, run your computer as a standard user (not as administrator), and that you follow a few basic rules when you surf the Internet, download files, and open attachments.
Once a virus is on your computer, its type or the method it used to get there is not as important as removing it and preventing further infection.

My grandkids have went to sights, now i get message that someone or something is trying to attack my computer but norton 360 blocked it. My question is I have bought another dell desktop pc and want to put...

Hi,

You don't have to worry about the attack being transferred to the new computer because they will both have a different IP address.

Providing you protect your computer with a good antivirus software like you are already using then you should be fine although no computer is 100% safe from attacks and viruses.

Norton 360 provides decent internet security plus some attacks are dependant on the site you visit. It's all about being vigilant and protecting your computer the best you can.

I have bought mcafee cd from the store and after i restarted the computer my computer freezes at the windows xp screen. how do i fix this?

Hi
I know this may sound childish but the answer right now is to remove Mcafee. Do this by going into SAFE mode. Press F8 while the computer is rebooting. Once at the SAFE menu select SAFE mode with networking. Once into SAFE mode goto START, Control Panel, Programs and Features. From there uninstall Mcafee. I had you go to the network mode because now you will need to download the Mcafee uninstall tool. This will remove the remaining pieces of Mcafee. Once all this is done go to normal mode and please check to make sure you don't have any other anti virus programs installed - these will definitely mess with Mcafee. If there are no other anti virus programs installed I have to assume it was a virus or malware that interfered with your Mcafee install. Unless you have them already I would suggest you download and then run these programs AVGFREE.exe, MALWAREBYTES.exe and SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe. You can download these from www.download.com. Once these are completed, we know your system is clean, now run the Mcafee install and everything should work fine. Good luck

System restore utility not getting activated by known methods

I'm a certified computer tech and have been doing this for years. system restore often causes more problems than it fixes. I recently ran into this issue on a friends computer. upon investigating his computer was infected with a nasty virus that infected all of his restore points. go to housecall.antiviurs.com or another security website and run a free online virus scan. check that first, if that isn't the problem try manually going into system restore and running it (start > all programs> Accessories > System Tools > system restore). it may be able to be fixed with the system restore. if not you may want to consider either taking it to a technician or backing up your files and reloading the comptuer.
