I have a Matsushita DVD-RAM UJ 850S ATA dtive in my Toshiba Satellite, and it wont always see a disc to rip or play it, and when I go to check my device, the computer doesnt even see the drive. Is it going bad, or what? Sometimes it does see the unit, and will rip a cd, maybe three in a row, then suddenly quits and says "you have to have a CD drive in order to rip CDs"

I called Toshiba support and my laptop is still under warranty......we looked in the registry and the DVD was not located. I took it to a toshiba warranty place and they had it back to me the next day. They told me they updated a driver.......I tried that and it didn't work but they used Touch Stone software and fixed it. Updated the registry......I don't want to mess with the registry so it was well worth it to me. I DO know that my son tells me NEVER to touch the registry without backing it up. He was not available to help or he would have fixed it for me. How the problem occured in the first place is a complete mystery to me. I am just computer savvy enough to know what NOT to do. Of course the place I took it to did not want to impart any more info than I was given. This information probably helps no one but I thought I should at least let you know my experience.

CD/DVD drive not working

Posted on Sep 01, 2010

I have a Sony Vaio laptop about 6 months old. I had trouble with Roxio Easy Media Creator and uninstalled it and my UJ850s DVD disappeared along with it. I found the following following Sony FAQ search for Code 39 error and it worked just fine:

Error: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Reasons for this error include a device driver that is not present: a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem: or a device driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.
NOTE: More information regarding this error is available in this Microsoft KB Article 320553.
To resolve the error, remove the device from Device Manager, and then reinstall or upgrade the driver.
If the error continues to occur, it may be possible to edit the operating system Registry to resolve the issue.
WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. This procedure involves editing the Registry. Using the Registry editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require the operating system to be reinstalled and can result in the potential loss of data.
IMPORTANT: Make a backup of the registry before proceeding.
Click the Start button, and in the Start Search field, type regedit and then press the Enter key.
NOTE: If prompted for an administrator password or a User Account Control prompt is displayed, type the appropriate password or click Continue.
In the Registry Editor window, in the left pane, double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder, double-click the System folder.
In the System folder, double-click the CurrentControlSet folder.
In the CurrentControlSet folder, double-click the Control folder.
In the Control folder, double-click the Class folder.
In the Class folder, click to select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder.
In the right pane, click to select the UpperFilters registry value.
On the menu bar, click Edit.
In the Edit menu, click Delete.
In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
In the right pane, click to select the LowerFilters registry value.
On the menu bar, click Edit.
In the Edit menu, click Delete.
In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.
In the Registry Editor window, click the X in the upper right corner to close the window.
Restart the computer.
The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer

Go to HP on line and seek the current drivers for the DVD drive. Or try the Control Panel/devices. Look at the Device list and seek out the C/DVD line and UPDATE DRIVERS from there.

CD/DVD RIVE NOT WORKING

This is a problem with several answers, however; for the most part, consider the Media that is inserted into the drive. If it is a COPY for example, the copy made on another computer may not line up correctly. The CD/DVD has magnetic lines that are true, very much like a phonograph record. If they do not line up correctly, they will not Read or Write. The other problem can be the Laser Head. If the reading head is misaligned, it too will have a problem reading data. The best way to get around the problem is to transfer the data from the CD/DVD media to a USB Flash drive, and go that route, or get an external USB CD/DVD for about 30 bucks at Wal Mart.

MATSHITA DVD-RAM uj-850s ATA Device does not working

This device is Plug and Play, that's why thre is no driver for it, besides, it's already installed in Windows. Is the Acer  alaptop or a desktop? Did you get the device after buying the computer? How did you installed it? Here is a tip, when installing th e drive, just make sure that the device is properly inserted, and go to the Bios to see if it's recognize.

After i try to find the registry (which is not available)
Why not give this a try:
  1. Start your computer after SHUTDOWN
  2. After your DESKTOP appear on the screen for about 10 second, QUICKLY INSERT ANY CD/DVD (in my case I insert Glee)
  3. Let the computer run for a while, don't do anything until it settle down
  4. Check at MY COMPUTER whether your cd is detected
  5. I got mine work this way!. Good Luck my friends!

Usually this code means either a cable is not connected correctly or the driver is not present or corrupt. Try downloading the latest driver from the manufacturers website. Hope this helps.

DVD ram not recognizing dvds/matshita DVD-RAM-UJ-85JS.

I too had the same problem, just take the DVD case out by unscrewing it from the bottom, then open the DVD case and jently clean the lens with a warm cloth. Put it back in and start your computer. It will work well.
