Question about Western Digital Elements powered by WD 320 GB External USB (WDE1U3200N) Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive runs almost continually - very hot as a result

I have two external drives. The Iomega has always seemed to run non-stop while the WD Elements only ran when computer was accessing it. Now the WD runs non-stop too. How can I determine what is causing this?

You can download the data lifeguard diagnostic utility off WD's website.

Try running Scan Disk and defrag. Otherwise use a program like SpinRite to do a low level scan of the disk.

Sounds like you need to create a new partition, and if you find that a partition already exists, delete it and create another.

My Iomega external ego hard drive(360GigaBytes)will cause my H.P. Pavilion with windows 7 to randomly restart while transferring data.

I had a similar 'rebooting' issue with my WD external drive caused by a faulty USB interface on my Desktop: if you have an external USB hub, try running your drive via the plug-in USB Hub to shield your external drive from your desktop inbuilt USB electronics..

Hello, I have a new WD Elements 500mg

If you are using Windows Vista then format your external drive with exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table, aka FAT64), or NTFS. And if you are using Windows XP then only solution is to format drive with NTFS file system.
How to do that, just right click on HD from My Computer an click format.

It is very possible that your BIOS will not support a large hard drive. Without more information on your system it will be hard to diagnose your problem.

WD Elements USB drive not recognized

Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.

  1. Click Start
  2. Right Click My Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Disk Management
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.
