CD Skipping I have had my system in storage for about 3 years now and i just found the power chord so i dusted it off and put a CD in it and it just keeps skipping around. I bought a laser head cleaner and a can of air and dusted it some more but it still wont work.

Re: CD Skipping

Some more intense cleaning might do it. Dust isn't very friendly to stereos, and it doesn't stay only on the surface. So, go get your favourite screwdriver, unplug it from the AC, open the covers and start cleaning, vacum, gentle brush, whatever it takes to get the dust out while not moving or misplacing any of the components. About the cd specifically - more often then not when i had cd problems it was solved by cleaning dust of the lense. locate the laser lense and check to see if theres any dust accumulated on it. If there is, very gently brush it off, if not check for anything else around there that looks out of place before closing the cover and trying to play a cd. make sure you try more then 1 cd, or more then 1 cd format. Don't try only burnt media. You didnt mention much about the symptoms, but here's a link to a good guide on diagnosing shelf systems - good luck

SOURCE: cd's skipping

Try first to clean the lens with a lens cleaner disc. or cleaning the lens manually. if that does not help, then im afraid the unit has come to the end of its usefull life. and is time to get a new one . Good Luck

Hi , Have you tried to clean the dust off of the laser lenz ? Some of those CD cleaners will work for you if you are not inclined to take the unit apart and clean it yourself. I think radio shack still sells CD cleaners ?

I have a sony mini hifi component system-mhc 3500 system for 22 years. Just last week, after playing a CD, when I tried to play another CD, it said "no disk". Tried it many times again, still not...

Dirt or dust can get on the lens anytime. It could be brand new and a spec of dust get on and cause it to stop reading discs. You don't have to keep cleaning it unless it lives in a dusty room, or where someone is a heavy smoker. It's a good idea to make certain any discs you put in have a wipe over first.
But you will have to clean it now.

It is probable that the battery will need to be changed, this the first step to find out if additional work is required.

CD drives have rubber belts and wheels - 5 years is a long time, perhaps these are worn out. A new CD/DVD drive is very inexpensive.

Get a lens Cleaning Disk and put it into the CD Player, there could be foreign objects on the lens itself, these and other shelf systems all have one common problem... Dust.

Sharp BA2100 3 CD mini component system - NO DISC

This is a relatively common problem when the optics get dirty. If you can reach the lens, try cleaning it using a cotton swab and alcohol. Don't bother with the "cleaning discs" available as all they can do is bruch off the dust. These lenses sometimes get a smoke or dirt film on them that the brushes can not celan.

Keep us posted.

Hi mate , ive got this exact stereo, Great aint they . i had the same problem so i stripped it down , took apart the CD platters and found some dust caught between the gears, you can look for the service manual on the internet as thats where i had my help from.
