If this is a grid type of item then something has to be touching the grid to complete the zapping circuit. What you have is basically a direct current device that has a positive charge on one grid and a negative charge on the other and only if something touches both grids will it actually zap anything. Merely pressing the button only charges the grids and does not cause arcing of electricity between them. If you want to test it find a dead bug and drop it onto the grid while pressing the button - then shake it sideways so the insect touches both sides and you will see it works.

Generic problem for all Vacuums
Roomba 4300 not working
Posted by RajeevT on Apr 25, 2008
It seems to be charging alright but when I press the green P button nothing happens. Anything I can do to get it working?
Just a suggestion, it could be that the internal battery is bad and not taking a charge, or like a laptop computer the a/c adaptor or power cord could be faulty. You have to be the judge on what would it cost to repair the vacuums including parts and labor, is the vacuum covered under a one year factory warranty? So I would check with your local vac dealer and also check the factory warranty to see if the item is still under the factory warranty. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

SOURCE: High pitched sound when vacuum is on
You may be loosing your bushings on the motor,if this is an expensive machine it may be cheaper to have it fixed,if not it will burn up eventually. Also try taking the beater bar out and make sure you don't have something rapped around it causing a noise.
Hope this helped.Let me know by rating me
