This has happened to me in a similar way; and mine was to where I had a connection, and yahoo messenger, itunes, other things would open; but when I would try to open internet explorer, it would hang, then look like it was opening, then go right to a cannot connect page. What I found out is that I had gotten some serious trojans/virus from a download. After everything that I could think of, ie system restore, redownloading IE 8, running antivirus and removing some of the trojans, and few other things, I failed, and so came to the conclusion that I had to just reformat the hard drive, wipe it clean, and then reinstall my operating system. After I did that, which was like 8 months ago, I haven't had one problem with connecting to any page. No problem at all. I hope this helps.

- If you have only had your computer for a couple of weeks, then another option for you is to take it back/send it back to where you bought it from and either request a repair or a replacement.
