When the system is booting up does the keyboard lite up momentarily? When booted does the CAPS Lock button light when pressed? If not then the problem is the motherboard. They are not difficult to replace and fairly cheap if you get one that will accept the same processor and RAM. Unfortunately this problem is not a repairable one.

The Solution to this occurance of "Keyboard error" , which is apparently being caused by a cracked trace or feed through on the motherboard related to the Keyboard processor, was to change both mouse and keyboard to a USB device.. USB devices are coupled thru the south bridge and therefore take a different signal path for the interrupt and data paths than the PS/2 devices. Once the interface devices were switched to the USB type. And the ports disabled in "Setup", the POST error indicators have been green. And the BSOD "fatal error" screen has not reoccured..
The cause of the crack in the traces or feedthroughs of the motherboard is most likely related to the lack of cooling this unit experienced when the rug fuzz and cat hair was allowed to gather on the cooling vents and CPU cooler fins.
Most owners do not read the users manual more than once, and a curssorary scan at that time, so they forget the needed cleaning to protect the thermal health of their compters.. Clean them at least each 6 months and oftener if they are sitting on a long fiber rug or the household has multilple pets in it...

Keyboard failure

you might try another keyoard to see if it works

try blowing out all of the dust from your keyboard using a fine air blower from an air compressor making VERY sure there is no MOISTURE in the lines.

dust causes static which causes lots of problems with a computer and its parts

make sure ps2 or the usb lead has a secure dust free connection if applicable

disconnect the keyboard restart your computer then reconnect it the found new hardware wizard should activate

if this does not fix the problem

restart you computer tap the f8 key repeatedly to enter safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you an attempt to repair your computer

If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen.

Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
select safe mode
Click start control panel keyboard hardware make sure you have the right keyboard selected
or you might have uninstall the keyboard then restart your computer then reinstall it and its drivers

click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to keyboard you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click update driver

hope it helps

I have no PS2 but i have USB keboard and mouse ports, how can my USB mouse and keyboard problem at boot up can be solved?

What is the problem? Do the usb ports work? Try different usb ports. If you can get into the Bios or System Setup check to make sure the USB ports are enabled.

I have a HP Pavilion s1600n with Windows XP Media Edition. The keyboard and mouse have stopped responding. Both are properly plugged in

if you are sure that your mouse and keboard are in good condittion and it is all ps2 port type the problem maybe the system driver for keyboard and mouse of your operating system, please get an extra usb port type keyboard and mouse and plugged it in to your pc and power it on the usb type keyboard and mouse may refresh the system driver and may read again your ps2 type keyboard and mouse.

Have a Intell D865PERL getting either 6 or 7 beeps when booting, can't be sure which. System will not boot but just beep with PS2 keyboard installed but will boot with keyboard removed. BIOS is version...

It's likely a bad keyboard- try using either an usb keyboard or another ps2 keyboard- if it works and boots normally with a different keyboard, the issue was the bad keyboard. If not, then the ps2 port has gone bad. (you could still use usb)

Have a Dell Dimension. rebooted cpu and says keyboard failure hit F1 or F12. Mouse works and keyboard works in bios mode, but will not boot to XP Pro desktop. Tryed 2 sets of keyboards and mice. What do...

First, I would try booting to Safe Mode and see if that gets you to Windows. If it does, then it's a driver issue that can be relatively easily fixed by "Uninstalling" the keyboard in the Control Panel/Device Manager, then rebooting and letting the system reinstall the driver.

If that doesn't do it, then it sounds like the (assuming you're using a PS2 keyboard) PS2 keyboard plug port may be compromised (ie., damaged). Try using a USB keyboard instead and see if that solves your issue (as trying to repair a PS2 keyboard port is not practical).

Hope that's helpful.

Sony vaio laptop is turning on but the keybord+mouse not working

If your Keyboard and mouse are PS2 type, turn off your system, unplug them and try a USB type mouse and keyboard instead. If you are already using USB type mouse and keyboard, then try plugging them into different USB ports. Bootup in Safe Mode if possible. If you do not have keyboard functionality during the initial boot process, you may have sustained damage to the motherboard. The fact you mentioned a noise (speaker type?) and then lost component function, would indicate a possible hardware failure

My keyboard works fine in BIOS but at login screen keyboard and mouse don't work. I tried SAFE MODE, same thing. Default BIOS same thing. PS2 or USB don't work but both work in BIOS. HELP

You may need to update/reinstall the drivers for your keyboard/mouse. If you able to get online, that would be faster. If not, use a) your restore disk, b) Press update drives in the Control Panel>Keyboard/Mouse.

Good Luck

Keyboard freezes in safe mode after starting windows xp

try the following steps:-
1.If it's a USB keyboard, try a different USB port or try a PS2 keyboard.
2.If it's a PS2 keyboard, check the pins on the plug. Unplug it and plug it back in.
3.Try booting up without the mouse plugged in.
4.Try a different keyboard.
5.If you have VPN or dial up software that has a custom GINA, try uninstalling it under safe mode.

Asus P5Rd1-vm problems restarting

That computer only works with a PS2 keyboard at powerup.

You could check the bios to see if there is a setting to disable the PS2 adaptor but I have never come across one.

Try running Windows in safe mode by pressing F8 at the beginning of the reboot process and select safe mode. Once windows is up, restart the machine.

If you get the same results while trying to get into safe mode, you may have to restore Windows.
