1. try single-user mode (hold down Cmd-S during startup tone and sequence). this should take you to a command-line screen where you can run the suggested fsck command: /sbin/fsck -fy (at the command prompt).
2. go here to see complete startup procedure in situations like this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417.
3. if that doesn't work, it sometimes helps to start the computer in target mode while attached to another computer via Firewire (hold down the "T" key while starting up). then you can navigate through your ~/Library/Preferences and find the most recently modified ones and pull those into a test folder on your hard drive somewhere (just create a new folder to hold them temporarily). then restart as normal. sometimes just yanking the most recently modified preference files (.plist files) works.

Per the internet site, it depends upon the model of laptop. Here are some examples:

Tip

Annoyed that your Num Lock key isn't on when you start your PC?

Here's a quick tip to ensure your numlock key stays "ON" by default when the computer starts.
1. log off your PC to the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen
2. Turn on the NumLock key
3. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del (like you are about to log on)
4. Don't log on, hit the "shut down" button to turn off your PC

This saves the numlock key in the "ON" position by default when the PC starts.

I have a Toshiba A505-S6960 laptop. Never have had a problem until today.......when I turn the laptop on it goes through the boot process but only makes it to the Toshiba logo screen with the F2 and F12...

It seems that your computer is not seeing your hard drive. This could either be because of bios settings or more likely because the hard drive has failed. If the unit is under warranty, call Toshiba support and describe the issue to them. If not, places like Best Buy can determine for sure the cause of the issue.

Can not get laptop to enter bios

On many of the MPC laptops, the bios can be brought up at boot by pressing the F2 key. Generally, while booting, the screen will show you the button to push. Here are some more of the most used key combinations you can also try. On our mpc support site, there is no manual available yet for this model. Also, mpc laptops have the capability to lock out the bios at users request so many used models obtained cannot be changed. We'll have a new support site for mpc up this summer. Details at mpcsupport@cox.net
Most of the time during boot-up the key (combination) will be shown. If it is not, then you could try the following key combinations:
  • Del
  • F1
  • F2
  • F10
  • Ins
  • Esc
  • Ctrl+Alt+Esc
  • Ctrl+Alt+Enter
  • Ctrl+Alt+Ins after Ctrl+Alt+Del
  • Ctrl+Ins
  • Ctrl+Alt+S
  • Ctrl+S
  • Ctrl+Shift+Esc
  • Shift+Ctrl+Alt + Num Pad Del
  • Ctrl+Esc
  • Ctrl+Alt and +

Just can't get it to start

Hi there Emimely
Unfortunately you will not be able to get passed that. Itis quite a fundamental error.

Do you still have your original installation disk?

You need to boot your make up from that disk and see if you can make some repairs from the apple utility. Failing that you will have to re-install the OS. If you can see the drive from the install disk and you have a external drive available you might want to back up important files now and do a clean install. Or archive the previous system.
