Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Pc starts to boot then hangs at 'Intel inside' logo. Faint noise from hard drive but nothing else happens. I've heard the occasional ominous clunking noise from inside too, before & after it developed the fault.

Thank you. I had a horrible feeling that might be the case. PC is out of warranty and I'm a PC dummy so will have to find a PC pro to fix it for me!

Most likely you are experiencing a hard drive failure.  The Click of Death is normally a good indicator.
Most likely a hard drive will resolve your problem.  If the system is under warranty, contact the vendor.  If not, you can buy a replacement HDD normally for less than $100
One source I like is http://www.newegg.com

Once I turn on the laptop it stays stuck on the LG Splash screen, I press F2 to enter bios setup but it just stays on the splash screen, and nothing progresses, I can't do anything,

I've seen issues like this with a bad hard drive. When entering the bios it queries the hard drive first and it's got issues it can hang it up like this. If you have a spare try that. You can try to boot it without a hard drive to see if it gets past this. Some computers won't boot without a hd though. If you've got another computer you can look around online to make a flash drive bootable and use that instead of your hard drive. Lastly, get a new hd.

My pc is not booting it is not writing the 80GB hard disk instead it says

OK, it says what?

Be more specific as to what is going on because Booting and Writing to a 80GB Hard Drive have nothing to do with each other initially. You've got to boot before the computer can do anything.

When I start the computer it gos to the intel logo and stops, therteefore I can't use the recovery disc to repair the faults

the computer is going to the intel logo because it is reading the hard drive first rather than the CD drive where the recovery disk is located. You need to change the boot order. You can do this in the System setup which is normally accessed by pressing the Del key once. Try turning off the computer and turning it back on and press the Del key or sometimes its the F10. Once in the system setup change the boot order to look at the CD rom drive or D drive first.

Boot Problems

Hi,

PXE means it will only boot while connected to the network,

You need to change the bois From network boot to Hard drive boot.

The system doesn't see a hard drive inside,

it thinks it is booting from the network only,

it boots to a server like this.

It is called a dumb terminal

Richard.

My Dell 4700c locks up for no reason at all, start-up issues

I have a feeling your hard drive is going bad if your hearing a clanking sound sometimes. Best way to know is to try to save your important stuff onto your external hard drive if you can and then format your C: drive using a windows 98 boot disk. If it can't go thru the format then you know for sure the drive is bad or if your hearing clanking sounds from the drive while your trying to do any of these steps then the drive is still bad.

My son changed towers and upgraded to another power supply

How long have you waited for it to boot up? Sometimes I have seen it sit on the logo for like 10 minutes thinking about the boot configuration. Also you might change out your hard drives and cd's and DVD's and check your jumper settings on all of them to see if any conflict with each other.

Used Dell Dimension 3000 drive issues

If you mean you need to install windows, you need to set your cdrom drive as first boot device in advanced bios settings or it will try to boot into a non-existent windows. Make sure your hdd is showing as the master drive, save settings and exit bios. Re-boot pc with windows disc in cd drive and hit enter when prompted to boot from cd.
