Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Pc starts to boot then hangs at 'Intel inside' logo. Faint noise from hard drive but nothing else happens. I've heard the occasional ominous clunking noise from inside too, before & after it developed the fault.

Thank you. I had a horrible feeling that might be the case. PC is out of warranty and I'm a PC dummy so will have to find a PC pro to fix it for me!

Most likely you are experiencing a hard drive failure.  The Click of Death is normally a good indicator.
Most likely a hard drive will resolve your problem.  If the system is under warranty, contact the vendor.  If not, you can buy a replacement HDD normally for less than $100

This is not uncommon to hear and usually nothing to worry about, but for piece of mind you can purchase an external hard drive to back up your files.

You can access the BIOS usually by pressing "esc", "F1", "F8", or "F12". One of those buttons

should work.

As for the hang up at the logo, it sounds like your hard drive might have crashed. The same thing

happened to me on my Vaio.

Any metalic sounds or clicking noise from the hard drive when booting up is an indication of a faulty hard drive, especially when Windows does not start up.
If it does start up but hangs easily then it has not failed completely. I suggest that you backup you data
To test the hard drive, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port, it this computer cannot detect it as an external hard disk and cannot open the folders and files then it is faulty.
Replace the faulty hard drive in the Thinkpad and install Windows to get a working laptop.

I have a gateway laptop model MA7and it wont start up.

It is not a hard drive issue. If hard drive is a problem system wont boot till motherboard processor. Try to reinstall your OS. It will fix your issue.

Boot Problems

Hi,

PXE means it will only boot while connected to the network,

You need to change the bois From network boot to Hard drive boot.

The system doesn't see a hard drive inside,

it thinks it is booting from the network only,

it boots to a server like this.

It is called a dumb terminal

Faint noise on booting.

Try this remove side cover and boot computer listen for any extra noise fan etc. also by power supply
As I think you have a bad bearing in a fan
To temp fix it
remove paper cover over center of fan and put a small and I mean small drop of light machine oil on bearing then replace paper cover.
check if this stops the noise if it does you know which fan to replace.
If it is power supply fan and if you think yourself capable remove fan and do the same to it
