I have a Danby DDR5009REE Dehumidifier-is there any way to put a timer on it? I feel like it can't be good for it to run all the time and it is hard for me to get to the basement. I am not sure if I like it running all the time- the cost factor and all.....

  • Anonymous Aug 20, 2011

I wanted a timer that would for example shut it off at 6pm and restart at 5am. I don't want to have to restart or turn off by pushing a button each time. I don't think this is possible with a store bought timer either....
I am waiting to see what it is costing me this month if I want to keep it or not.

Actually, you don't need to add a timer. The model you have already has a timer built in. On the unit itself, as well as the hand held remote. So you can set it either way. Set the amount of time you want it to run, when it reaches that time, it will shut Off automatically. One of the most important things to remember is to clean the air intake regularly. At least once every two weeks.

In cae you have misplaced the Owner's Manual, I ave included a link to it that you can download and print for future reference.

Unless it's a heavy duty store bought timer that can handle the amount of amps your unit pulls, it won't work. But, although it won't cost as much to operate the unit , as you may think. It's not a safe idea to let it run constantly for several days unattended. There are heavy duty commercial timers you can buy from places like W.W. Grainger (www.grainger.com), that will work. But, they aren't cheap. FYI- The least expensive non peak time for electricity is between 10pm & 6am

This is what I bought- I made sure to check all the details of the one I got. I am disabled and it made me nervous to have it running non stop all the time because I don't go to the basement a lot. I set up timer last night and it worked (came on anyway) I will check to make sure it turns off now. Thanks for your help

Great! I hope it continues to work for you. If not, you'll know you need a heavy duty timer. Thanks for the 4-Thumbs Up Rating. I really appreciate it. Have a great day!

The hose connection nipple is smaller than the garden hose-connector and leakes. Do I need a special hose or will putting plumbers tape on the nipple stop the leak?

No, that would probably leak too. What you need to do, is go to your local hardware store or home center (Plumbing Dept) and purchase a female to male connector. The female end is to connect to the unit's male hose connection and the other (Male) end, needs to be the same size for garden hose connection. Make sure that you use an appropriately sized washer for the Female end.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

Units is running but there is not any water being collected?

If the machine's compressor runs when you switch it on, then turn the machine on maximum and let it run for an hour or so. Then check the coils in the back with your hand. If they are not getting cold at all, then there is a significant problem with the refrigeration process in the unit. It may have developed a leak and allowed your refrigerant gas to escape, or there may be another internal problem with the compressor. Either way you would need to have it serviced by a fridge technician, or more likely just replaced with a whole new unit since both options can potentially cost about the same.

If the unit runs normally and the coils are getting cold, then make sure they are not totally icing up which will impede the unit's performance.
If your dehumidifier is freezing up then that probably means it is actually working well. The humidity level in the room is probably just relatively low and you probably have the unit turned up too high for the conditions.

Try turning down the setting on the unit so that it cycles on and off every few hours and does not run continuously.

Also try using some warm soapy water to clean off any dust or oily residue from the cooling coils in the rear of the unit.

The ambient temperature in the room may also be a bit too low, so you can try adding some heat to the room if necessary. A dehumidifier will not work properly if the ambient air temperature is too low. Basically, the warmer and more humid the room is, the better they work.Since warm air rises, you can even try lifting the unit higher up off the cold floor onto a bench or table where the air is warmer.

You can click on the following link for a general operating and troubleshooting guide with additional tips on effective dehumidifier operation:

Hope that was helpful. Thank you very much and good luck.

I have a ddr5009ree. It runs. Air is going in. Air is going out but no water collects. What should I do?

listen if you hear the compressor running. Most likly a failed unit but depends on how hany you are. After disconnecting the power remove the cover of the unit. Closely look at the wiring and look for any signes of burnt wiring or other damage. My guess is that a controll has opend preventing the compressor from operating. It might be easer to look for a new unit.

Ijust bought a danby dehumidifier ddr5009. The compressor works fine but the fan never stops running. Even if I set the timer on standby.

This dehumidifier is built in such a way that the fan runs all the time;however the compressor works only when it is needed. These infos are not specified in the booklet. It does not work like the old ones.
