Question about Samsung HCN653W 65" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Convergence drift My HCN653W is about 2 years old. I find that the convergence drifts, so I bring up the crosses and reset the convergence, I save the settings and the picture looks perfect...for a couple hours. After a couple hours the convergence is off again--way off. It seems to happen in random spots on the screen, in varying degrees...but it's always significant. I've never had this problem before, it only just started.

Re: Convergence drift

The feedback control is not working on one of the colours.

Check vblk and hblk pulses. and then check stk to convergnece module feedback pulse.

Re: Convergence drift

Well, problem is that your TV is just too big... ;] Most probably you're looking at a job that includes replacing some STK chip on the convergence board, or the board itself. in parts a chip should be around 5 bucks, and the board over a hundred. Good luck

How do I adjust the convergence properties on an RCA rear projection tv?

Normally on the RCA rear projection TV's you would bring up your menu and choose the Setup menu, then press OK on the remote. That menu would then have Convergence as a choice. Once that was chosen the next menu would give you the choice of either letting the TV run it's own Autoconvergence program, or you would select either Red or Blue convergence.

Choosing Red Convergence would bring up a Yellow cross-hair in the middle of the screen. If the Convergence was not correct you would see separate Green and Red cross-hairs. Once they were perfectly aligned you would again see one Yellow cross-hair.

Choosing Blue Convergence would bring up a Blue cross-hair in the center of the screen. If the alignment was out you would see 2 Blue cross-hairs. Using the Up and Down and Left and Right cursor keys you would adjust the alignment until a single solid Blue cross-hair was in the center of the screen.

Sony KP-57WS500 convergence drift

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Double image/ out of focus with green and blue seperation

Your tv is crt-based and is out of convergence. In other words, the settings for keeping the Red, Green and Blue images aligned have drifted and must be reset. This is common with CRT projectors and CRT rear projection tvs.

Refer to your owners manual for instructions on re-aligning it.

Reverse fisheye!!

you are going to need to replace the convergence board assembly. It is available at Also get the service manual, as you will need to do some touchup convergence and reset the perfect focus setup again If you have the technical ability. If you do, great! If you do not, these service menu alighnments can mess up your set, so take no shortcuts. Good Luck

Possible Convergence

I would suspect you have several capacitors drifting out of tolerance as they warm up. When checking for these, also make sure to change The value Of C813 (33uf 16v) To (10uf 50v) if it hasn't been done already. You'll need a technican with a capacitor meter and ESR tester to find the marginal capacitors. I doubt that any of your STK packs (IC's) on your convergence module are defective. I'm also assuming that the tapping with the wooden stick didn't change anything, otherwise a bad solder connection could be the culprit.
