How do i get to the water pump
What do you do if the tension spirng falls into the engine?
First you need to take off all the belts, then remove the a/c line to axcess to the 8 mms bolts holding
the upper and lower timing belt covers. To facilitate the job you will need to remove lower crankshaft pulley.
This is a delicate job, since you have to access to the cam belt, I suggest buying the haynes manual for your car and following the step by step illustrated procedure, before starting the job.

Replacing Your Water Pump - Popular Mechanics
Acquire (2) 3" long coarse thread M8 bolts, set aside. remove main belt, belt tensioner pulley, belt tensioner bracket. then remove the timing chain tensioner cover located below-left of the the passenger-side motor mount, and the water pump cover located just below-right of the same motor mount. push the tensioner piston in and lock the piston in place by using a smaill nail, or push pin inserted in the hole.. youll see it. then rotate the engine counter-clockwise 20-30 degrees to free up chain tension on the water pump. Remove the bolts holding in the pump. Now using the 2 M8 bolts, thread them into 2 of the same top and bottom bolt holes evenly to pop out the pump. be sure to keep an eye on the chain as it can hold the pump in and hamper your efforts in getting the pump out.Make sure to lube up the 2 o rings on the new pump real slick, and pop it back in place. installation is the same, only backwards and without the M8 bolts. dont force the pump in...
Go to Sears and get a telescoping magnet to try to fish it out. I got the tensioner cylinder out my 95 Maxima V6 that way when it popped out and into the timing chain cover. I assume you are talking about the spring inside the primary chain tensioner that pushes the cylinder out. You are supposed to push the cylinder into the tensioner body and pin it by inserting a bulletin board push pin into the small hole in body. Please note, the tensioner on my 95 Maxima had a solid metal dowel about 3/8" long ON THE INSIDE OF THE SPRING. So, you had better find it, too. While at Sears, get a round inspection mirror on telescoping handle. They are excellent for less than $10 and I can't work on the Maxima without a mirror due cramped spaces.

This is one of the most frusterating things to do because of the very limited space inside the engine, but you will have to remove the radiator the fan blade, all the hoses, the balancer, move the alternator, remove the timing belt cover and all the serpentine belts, remove the timing belt "MARK THE BELT WHERE IT ORIGINALY WAS OR YOU WILL MESS THE TIMING UP AND POSSIBLY THE ENGINE!!!", Remove water pump the reinstall new one, the assemble everything back together!! GOOD LUCK ITS A PAIN IN THE @$$!!!!

I tried to repair the water pump. The bottom screw hole broke off when I used the MM8 bolts. Is there any other way to get the water pump off since I have lost one of me leverage points?
Is this a "shadetree" job? It looks like I can do it from the top through the hood without getting under the car. I have no way to jack up car or remove wheel. I have a 95 Maxima with water pump bad. Help would be appreciated.
