Minn-kota 865 autopilot

My trolling motor stays at power when foot switch is released. The constant on switch is off when this happens. To stop motor i have to slide power control to 0. Can a certain wire be disconnected to stop this?

This problem is not in the foot pad, I have a spare and it does the exact same thing.I've found that a small tap on the circuit board in the motor base will shut it off.I was wondering if there was a way to bypass this part of the circuit board.

It is indeed the Relay on the board. I have successfully used a dremel tool and dremelled the bottom of the board to unsolder the relay and dremelled the old relay off the top of the board. Then you mix up some epoxy and epoxy the new relay in and fill in the holes on the bottom of the board. It is a common relay and worth about $10.00.

Hello dtspins2. Your footswitch is stuck. Disconnect the DC. Remove the bottom of the foot control, check the wiring for insulation broken off and wires shorting out, and disconnect a wire(note color of wires) from switch, reconnect power to confirm motor don't run. Remove the switch and contact your local electrical supply store(may cost less) or marine store for replacement. Good Luck.

We have a problem Huston. I will have to research a tech manual on your minn-kota model but during the mean time you have eliminated the most common. If you open the motor base be very conserned of the water seal gasket. Most motor bases are hard wired. This one may have a relay internal & it could be the culprit. Relay come in two types, waffer and solid state. If is a waffer, tape the relay very lightly to isolate the problem. Check the wiring for shorts. Visualy check the circuit board for a short/open contact or crack in the traces. Advise in soldering 101, find a trashed circuit board and with a 25w iron, solder, & solder wick & get some experience in soldering. A piece of wick makes a good patch for a broken trace on a circuit board.

Hello dtspins2. I just got of line with a minn-kota tech. He can fax or E-mail the tech info I need but it requires the serial # for the correct one. With this info your minn-kota will troll again.

Good news always has bad news. Good news, a replacement PCbd part # 277-4732 Description-Control Board Assembly. Price $200.00 plus shipping. Order on line at This is an updated verson with a battery level output, just tape the wires up for your application.

Bad news, the unit is epoxyed meaning closed in a seal. You have confirmed its a relay problem on the PCbd. If the componets are in a clear epoxy you maybe able to ID the relay and aquire a crossreplacement from a local electronics parts store. Removing in is a challange. As I mentioned a 25w iron to melt the epoxy & wick the solder from the relay connections on the PCbd. Epoxy has a mist during melting that is VERY HARMFUL, mask & goggles including a air breeze a must. There is no exchange price. Good luck.

On a Minn Kota All Terrain trolling motor, what should the MOM/OFF/CON switch be set to when using the foot pedal manually?

You should only use the MOM (or momentary) setting when using the push button the foot pedal. Con will just keep the motor running and your foot control will only allow for direction and speed!

Minn Kota power drive trolling motor will not steer to the right **** huard

It is the circuit board in the foot pedal. You will have to replace the whole foot pedal. This is a very poor design. The thin plastic which protects the contacts gets a little hole which allows water to enter and consequently the contacts corrode. Has happened to me two times in past four years. It might be OK for operation in a dirt-free water-free environment; but not under actual fishing conditions.

    Possible sticking foot control switch

If you can undo the switch and it won't run any more, the it is the switch except for any other wiring short out of sight depending how that switch is hooked up. Strangely these devices should be designed to fail to safe. In your case some exception?
