Make?

Model?

Year?

If you have pretensioners on the seat belt buckles, it could be a bad connection or a fired pretensioner.

    I dont understand this one

  • gerry bissi Aug 19, 2011

I need to know the make, model, and year of your car. Like Ford Mustang 2005.

Then I can see if you have pretensioners on your seat belts. In an accident, they fire and tighten your seat belt for 2 seconds, then release. If they fire or malfunction, it turns on your air bag lamp.

It's on the inner buckle and the wire could be loose or chafed there too.

  • Anonymous Aug 19, 2011

this is a 1999 mercury sable LS 3.0 DOHC the car has never been in an accident

  • gerry bissi Aug 19, 2011

OK, no pretensioner on your car.

If you have NGS, what is the DTC, idagnostic trouble code? Or, the lamp fault code using the IP air bag lamp?

DTC - Diagnostic trouble code, retrieved using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 418-F048 (007-00500) or equivalent.

LFC - Lamp fault code, flashed on AIR BAG indicator.

are you getting lamp fault codes flashing?

Lamp fault codes (LFCs), if present, will begin flashing approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned to RUN. This is the amount of time it takes the ECS to perform all tests and verify system faults, if present.
LFCs are displayed as a series of flashes and pauses of the AIR BAG indicator. LFCs are two-digit numbers.

Example: An LFC 32 is displayed as follows:

flash flash flash - (two second pause) -
flash flash - (five second pause)...
flash flash flash - (two second pause) -
flash flash - (five second pause)...

LFCs are prioritized numerically so that if two or more faults occur at the same time, the LFC with the highest priority will be displayed.
After the LFC is displayed five times, the air bag indicator will illuminate continuously until the ignition switch is cycled.

a Flashes five times per second.
b Tone will sound only if additional DTCs are present.
c Tone will sound only if additional DTCs are present.
DTC - Diagnostic trouble code, retrieved using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 418-F048 (007-00500) or equivalent.

LFC - Lamp fault code, flashed on AIR BAG indicator.

    more info
    Air Bag System Functions
The air bag electronic crash sensor (ECS) module illuminates the AIR BAG indicator for approximately six seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN and then turns the AIR BAG indicator off. This indicates that the AIR BAG indicator is operational. If the AIR BAG indicator does not illuminate at all, stays on continuously or flashes at any time, then a fault has been detected by the ECS.

The ECS incorporates non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM) to store diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and retain them for 254 key cycles. The ECS will always display the highest priority DTC stored in NVRAM. DTCs may be cleared from the ECS after the fault conditions are serviced. Refer to Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCs.
If a system fault exists and the air bag warning indicator is not functioning, an audible chime will be heard indicating a need for service. The chime is a series of five sets of five beeps. This does not indicate an LFC 55 or any other DTC. The air bag warning indicator must be serviced before LFCs can be determined.
WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).

The ECS includes an internal back-up power supply. This feature provides sufficient back-up power to deploy the air bags in the event that the battery (10653) or battery cables are damaged in a collision before the safing and air bag sensors close. The back-up power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after the battery ground cable is disconnected.
The ECS incorporates an internal safing sensor. Proper mounting of the ECS and bracket assembly is critical to the function and performance of the air bag system.
The ECS is non-serviceable and must be replaced as a unit in the event of failure and after every air bag deployment.

ecs module may be bad. find on ebay or salvage yard

Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute.
Pull back the floor carpet from underneath the instrument panel at the center tunnel and position out of the way.
Disconnect the air bag electronic crash sensor (ECS) module electrical connector locking clip and electrical connector.
Remove the ECS module retaining nuts.
    Remove the ECS module.

How do I get the SRS light on my 1997 Acura rl to go off

You have a module that's going bad or is bad. Someone had either wrecked the car previously and didn't replace all damages modules. You can have a shop put on computer to tell you exactly which one needs replaced. There is one on the front of the vehicle one under drivers seat and one in with the seat belts those ate just sensors the actual modules are the site bags themselves

I have a 1998 chrysler concorde. The airbag light on the dash stays on and my horn doesnt work. How do i fix this without costing me tons of money?

Could be a wiring problem or the clockspring in the steering column.
You would need to pull the steering wheel and test the circuits.

1997 honda civic 1.6L DX SRS Air Bag light stuck on after drove throo heavy rain!

A code reader may not access the body computer, but a professional scanner should. You may be able to research the air bag system online and find a way to make the light flash the codes.
I would guess after reading your description one of the front crash sensors got water in the connector and the sensor has failed.

MY AIR BAG LIGHT IS STAYING ON AND SOMETIMES IT FLASHES?

You need to find out what the fault code is. It will direct you to the area responsible.

Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor
ani_caut.gif WARNING: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SUBSTITUTE ANOTHER FUSE VALUE FOR THE 10A BATTERY FUSE. ANY FUSE OTHER THAN 10A MAY CAUSE DISARMING FAILURE AND MAY RESULT IN DANGER TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE 10A BATTERY FUSE UNTIL THE AIR BAG SYSTEM FIRST HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED (SEE DEACTIVATION PROCEDURE FOR DETAILS).
NOTE: The safing sensor is internal to the air bag diagnostic monitor (14B056) and is not replaced separately.
The air bag diagnostic monitor continually monitors all supplemental air bag restraint system (SRS) components and wiring connections for possible faults in the system. If the air bag diagnostic monitor detects a fault in the SRS when the ignition switch (11572) is in the RUN position, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be displayed by the air bag indicator, located on the instrument cluster (10849).
The air bag diagnostic monitor does not deploy the air bag in the event of a collision. The LH or RH air bag sensor and the safing sensor determine when to deploy the air bag.
The air bag diagnostic monitor illuminates the air bag indicator for approximately six seconds when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and then turns the indicator off. This shows that the air bag indicator is operational. If the air bag indicator does not illuminate or the indicator stays on or flashes at any time, a fault has been detected by the air bag diagnostic monitor.
DTCs may not be displayed for approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position. This is the amount of time the air bag diagnostic monitor requires to perform all tests and verify system faults.
Each DTC (a series of flashes and pauses of the air bag indicator):
  • Represents a two-digit number.
  • Is always displayed at least twice.
If the diagnostic monitor detects a fault in the air bag system, a DTC will be written to the diagnostic monitors non-volatile RAM (NVRAM). This DTC will then cause the lamp to flash a lamp fault code (LFC) on the air bag indicator and can be retrieved with the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester. After repair, the DTC may then be cleared from the NVRAM.
If a system fault is present and the air bag indicator is malfunctioning, an audible tone will be heard. The tone is a series of five sets of five beeps. If the tone is heard, the air bag system requires repair.
If a fault exists that makes unwanted air bag deployment possible, the air bag diagnostic monitor will attempt to remove deployment power by turning on a solid state switch to blow the 10A battery fuse 2.
If the 10A battery fuse has successfully been blown by the air bag diagnostic monitor, the air bag diagnostic monitor will not attempt to blow it again until the proper fault has been repaired and cleared (see Diagnostic Trouble Code Clearing procedures for details). The air bag diagnostic monitor will store both the unwanted deployment DTC and the loss of deployment power DTC. The loss of deployment power DTC is the highest priority.
DTCs are prioritized numerically. If two or more faults occur at the same time, the fault having the highest priority will be displayed first. After that fault has been corrected, the next highest priority fault will be displayed.
The air bag diagnostic monitor includes an internal backup power supply. This feature provides sufficient backup power to deploy the air bag in the event the battery (10655) or battery cables are damaged in a collision before safing and air bag sensors close. The backup power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after the positive battery cable is disconnected.
--------------------------------------------
The DTCs can be retrieved with New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester using the Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCs option. Any DTCs stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor will be displayed on the NGS along with a brief description of the DTC. If no DTCs are present, the NGS Tester will display a SYSTEM PASSED message. This option can also be used to clear DTCs from the air bag diagnostic monitor memory, as long as the concern no longer exists. Once a DTC is logged into the air bag diagnostic monitor memory, it will stay in memory until 255 key cycles have been recorded or until the NGS is used to erase the DTCs. Once 256 key cycles have been recorded since the concern was last detected, the DTC will automatically be removed from memory.

1997 S-10 Pickup location of horn relay, horn not working. I found 3 relays in club compartment which one is it?

I would check the horn to see if it gets power with a testlight, and try to ground out one of the leads to see if it sounds. It should have power at all times and the button on the steering wheel controls the ground. That can be a source of the problem as well, the button on the steering wheel may not be grounding out the wire to the horn.

Can also take apart the steering wheel until you get down to the horn switch contact and try to ground it out with a screwdriver or test light to see if sounds the horn.

May have to remove the air bag first, though.

The following talks about the steering wheel disassembly:

Steering Wheel Removal & Installation Except Models With Air Bag To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Center the steering wheel so that the front wheels are straight.
  3. If equipped, remove the horn cap from the center of the steering wheel. NOTE: If the horn cap or shroud is equipped with an electrical connector it must be unplugged in order to remove the cap/shroud from the steering column.

  4. Remove the steering wheel-to-steering shaft retainer clip (snapring), then loosen and remove the nut. NOTE: Since the steering column is designed to collapse upon impact, NEVER hammer on it!
  5. Matchmark the relationship of the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Some models may already be equipped with one or more alignment marks. If not, make your own using a permanent marker.
  6. Using a suitable steering wheel puller, such as No. J-1859-03 or equivalent, carefully draw the wheel from the steering column.
To Install:
NOTE: Before installing the steering wheel, be sure that the turn signal switch is in the Neutral position. DO NOT mis-align the steering wheel more than 0.8 in. (20mm) from the horizontal centerline.
  1. Align the match marks and carefully fit the wheel onto the steering shaft splines.
  2. Install the retaining nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

Here's a quick check list for most common cost of SRS / Air bag problem.

Dirty contacts on seat belt connectors (under seats)

Dirty contacts on driver and passenger sides weight sensors (under seat)

Seat covers

Weight on passenger seat
(Example: grocery package trigger SRS / Air Bag light on the way home.)

I recommend you to pass an vacuum over the contacts and use CRC electronic parts cleaner to rule out connectivity problem.

I DO NOT recommend disconnecting the negative battery connector to clean the code(s).

Without the code(s) the dealer will takes "BILLABLE" time to reproduce the problem.
