JVC LT-40FN97 LCD TV powers on, but only shows a gray glow, it doesn't display any picture from internal sources -like the menu- or external -like cable or video games-; however, volume is ok.

Tried the power reset, no change.

  • atmalibra Sep 07, 2008

Before I crack it open, what am I looking for in terms of components? Is it a possible fuse or circuit board issue? Where would the ones for video be located at?

You may have a fuse located on the AC adapter or on the rear of the TV but this is rare. I would try all the simple steps first that we have provided. Then for parts for you TV here is a great site.

This site has been tested and contains no pop ups or spyware
www.partstore.com

Your board will have a fuse located on it so try that and then
you will have to check for any blown Resistors. I can smell if something is blown as soon as I open up a Tv so that should give you a good idea if the board is ok.

It could be bad color filters. the lamp works since you get a glow when you turn on the TV.

the only thing you can do is get a repair man or if its still in warranty, call JVC to come and check it out. you should not pay for this if its still under warranty.

Do not rate until satisfied.

Check if there's any blown components inside the circuit board like capacitor, ICs and Fuse. Mainly the power supply is the first to be affected. If you have no idea how to open the or check the circuit board, better have it check by your nearest TV repair center or call a tv technician

The circuit board definitely needs to be checked because there's a bad component on it. Sometimes it can be obviously seen if it's burned or bloated, but sometimes you need to use a multi meter tester to check the suspicious component near the power plug.

Your internal speakers may be shut off, go into your menu, go to sound, look for an internal or external audio setting. If internal make sure it is on, if external make sure it is off

My maxent TV has no picture and no sound

If an LCD TV has sound but no picture do the following:

Use the source button to ensure that source is not set to the wrong input.

Try unplugging power cord for ten minutes, to ensure it is not a setting problem.

Check all the video cables at the back of TV.

Check Light /Color settings.

If problem persist and does not depend on external receiver or settings, then it is likely an internal fault.

If it has sound but no picture then one of the following parts is faulty, and must be tested and replaced:

The inverter is the high voltage board that provides variable power to the backlight lamp. This is the most common. When inverter is faulty you can get no picture, or a very dim picture that can only be seen by pointing a torch light with a 45 degree angle on the LCD surface from very near distance.
The inverter must be tested by reading voltages with a multimeter.

The LCD ribbon cable/LCD display and connectors.
This is quite uncommon, but happens. If the TV had been hit or moved the LCD cable may have slipped out, or the LCD connector may be damaged.

The LCD controller board.
This is the board that controls the video signal, it is difficult to test, as there is need to read determined values on IC pins. To test this board you need to purchase a service manual and follow the troubleshooting diagrams on service manual.

Input/Output Signal boards.
This are the boards where you connect the video and audio cables, if a signal board is defective, then you may get no picture on particular inputs located on faulty board.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual.

If you want to repair at your own expenses, just locate any good qualified repairer.

In your case the led flashing is indicating protection mode. That usually indicates an internal fault.

Check the bulbs. If one is burned out, you will get this problem. The bulb is easy to change but will run you about $300.
