When you boot your computer it offers you a chance to enter setup... usually del(ete) key or f11. if neither of those work ... watch as you boot up ... it will show you the key to hit to enter setup.
look for boot options... often in the second menu on the left hand side list.

My pc will not boot up

You will have to change where it's booting from, can go to bio's for that to change it, you want to change the order on from what your computer boots up from, like cd rom/hd/or diskette etc. That will fix the problem.

I want to reformat my computer, my question was how to first boot my cd rom to install...

Start your computer.
When you see the 'Press DEL to enter BIOS SETUP mode", press the 'DEL' key.
Change the "boot-order" to put your CD-ROM as the "first" (highest-priority) boot-device.
Save-and-exit from BIOS setup.
Insert the disk into the CD-ROM.
Your computer should boot from the disk in the CD-ROM.

Will not boot cannot get to safe mode if I do a recovery will I lose all data files, not going to do advanced

from my exp recovery CD is of no use at all....if ur OS is corrupted.....use a WinXP install CD and boot from that. to do that...insert the CD in the CD/dvd drive and switch on...if the boot seq in BIOS is set to CD drive then it will boot first from that else it will boot from HD...so if u can get into BIOS by pressing the F1/F2/Del key etc and change the boot seq to the foll:
1st boot CD rom
2nd boot Floppy
3rd boot HDD0

u can even just disable 2nd and 3rd apart from keeping 1st boot to CD rom
if u have more than one HD or more than one partition in ur HD then u can install a new fresh Win XP in that and once that's done then change the boot seq back to HDD0 from CDROM drive in the 1st boot order
it will get back ur machine live then u can copy all ur imp files to a pen drive or CD then once u r safe of ur data u can do a low level format of the full HD and then aprtition that as per ur requirment

Check the following:

1 make sure that the cdrom is okay. if not sure then try cleaning the cdrom lense which can be found in the cd tray,

2 make sure that the cd disc you are trying is a bootable one

Bad News, serious problem!

Either Operating System is corrupt or Hard Drive defective. First Try REinstalling the Factory Recovery Disk Bios. Open CD rom Trey Place Factory System REstore disk. Turn on Computer and you should see "bood from CD, press any key" . Do so and follow instructions. Remeber to DELETE SECTORS when asked and when prompted select NSFS format. Follow instructions , use common sense and it should work.

If the HD is Defective, it will stop loading and indicate it cannot find HD in an error message.

One other thing. IF when you insert the disk and it boots up and does not go into the restore mode look on bottom of screen for BOOT ORDER and select CD ROM as the first boot. If you dont see that then you have to go into the BIOS and reset BOOT ORDER TO CD ROM FIRST. To get into Bias try tapping down f-2 key as its booting. If that dont work repeat with f-10, f 12 and then Delete button if all else fails. Find BOOT ORDER in BIAs and follow instructions on making CD ROM the first boot device. Then Save and Exit. Reinsert Restore disk and wait until you get the boot from cd rom prompt (process upove).

Unfortunately all data will be lost but computer will work fine.

If the drive is defective it has to be replaced. Write me again if that is the case if you want to do that yourself.

Good Luck

Cheers !
