Maybe it was dropped or shaken very strong and now it can't read a sim card. Take out and put back in sim card and see if this will work. It happend to me few times.
Have you found an answer for losing all your contacts, I just got a new Samsung Galaxy Ace and a lot of my contacts disappear after a couple of days, a few of the alphabet letters are missing completely and cannot figure out why, going to put sim card back in old phone and see if my contacts were saved onto phone to get them back on sim card again, think that will be easier that editing manually, although whose to say when sim card back in new phone this won't happen again!
