Hi I just bought an Acer Aspire m1610, but when I switch it on the monitor only displays 'no signal' briefly then switches off. I have tried 2 known working monitors, made sure the cable is screwed in tightly, but no joy. the light comes on on the tower, the fan starts, the keyboard lights up and there is a beep, just no display on the monitor.
On the back of the tower there is attached a thick black plastic cover that says "pull release" on it, 2 thirds of the way down on the right hand side. I haven't removed it yet as I can't see what it's covering and don't want to invalidate my warranty. There was no user manual included and i can't find any online.
thanks in advance.
I think you need to connect the cpu cable with the monitor to start it.
if still your computer turns on without issue, but your computer screen is showing a No Signal message, it could be due to problems in the CMOS, RAM, VGA card, or the cable that connects your CPU to your monitor.
If the cable is a problem. You can get a new one at

Hello mat78, Unfortunatelly the problem is hardware based. You will need to have the monitor repaired in a service center. Here's why: LCD/TFT monitors don't produce light themselves. They are composed by a matrix of transistors (TFT - thin film transistor) that have the property to reflect or allow some light (certain wavelenghts)to pass through them. They don't produce light by themselves. Instead there is a fluorescent tube (neon like) light inside the monitor and that's the light source used in order for you to see what's on the screen. A flourescent light is suposed to last pretty much, i don't think yours has a problem, you say it works for some seconds or so. Instead your problem is most probable with the inverter circuitry that powers on that light. It's a common problem among these types of monitors but in your situation i don't think it will be an expensive repair. In the case that the screen is dark (in a dark place you can't read or view anything on it) but if you apply light to it ( a flashlight or something) and you see something, then the problem is most likely to have occured with the invertor. Try to ask at a local service center for a repair, this shouldn't be an expensive procedure. Hope this helps.

your monitor is telling you it's on it's last legs..either that or your compaq has a bad video section. either is more vital than a video cable being loose.

The teardown information from rbrown67 was very accurate and easy to follow. It helped tremendously in tearing down my machine to replace the AC plug.

Well you either have bad RAM, or a Video Card that has been faulty from looking around. best way to test is to get some new Memory stick(s) if the new ones run fine, then the one you took out was faulty and the video card is good.
If the computer still doesn't boot, then its a video card issue, and that means you'll have to get a new video card.

I have the same model after youlet it sit for a long enough period to cool down it will come back on and work normal, it is a cooling problem called gateway and they confirmed this theproblem I ran in to was what fan this computer has 3. temp fix I used was to remove the tower cover to allow better air flow try this till you can figure out what fan is messing up
