Re: vtech smile toy.
Have you tried making sure you have connected the right color cords in the back? My guess is that they are in the wrong place as that has happened to me before too. Other thing you can try is make sure your tv is on the right channel, 3,4, AUX channel, etc. If you can hear it, than the sound plug is in correctly that is for sure. Let me know if these work. (I have a vsmile too and am happy to help)

Does it have a socket for an external supply? If so try it
Most likely reason for not turning on is bad batteries or connections followed by a loose wire inside. If you are sure you have tried good proven batteries and the battery contacts in the smile are clean, then you have nothing to lose by opening it and looking for a dropped off wire, as long of course as it is out of warranty.
I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

Sounds like the contacts on the games need to be cleaned. On the game cartridge, push back the little cover and clean the gold colored contacts on both sides. I use a cotton ball or q-tip with alcohol on it. Let it dry before you put it back in the v.smile.
Try plugging the joystick into the opposite port - if it is on the Player 2 port, plug it into Player 1, etc. If it works in one port, but not theother, then one of the ports is bad/damaged. If it doesn't work in either port, it is the joystick itself. Replacement joysticks can be ordered from VTech, Amazon, Target or Walmart.
1)Press the Reset – Press and hold the ON button for about 10 seconds 2)Make sure the game is inserted far enough into the system, and that it is pointing in the right direction. You may occasionally need to clean the contacts. 3)Also, make sure you are using the supplied power cord/adapter, not batteries.Batteries cause more problems than they’re worth. -Tha Mp3 Doctor
It is most likly the problem is where you put the game in. Try using a can of air to spray in there. If that doesn't work, It would be cheaper to buy a new one then to have that one seviced. You could also spray the air into the cartridge.
