Does this noise only happen when switching between these two gears ? Also need to know how much play you have in the clutch pedal (push down on pedal, how far does it go down--free play?? plus when you release the pedal how far from the floor does it star to engauge ??) need to know these questions first before i can answer your question..ok..

yeah it only happens switching from 3rd gear to the 4th gear. i push the clutch all the way down then i slide it into 4th and it makes that noise when i haven't even lifted the clutch yet. it is only between 3rd and 4th, its okay on 1st 2nd and going 4th to 5th isnt a problem. it engages about half way. i had my car for over a year and this is the very first problem i have ever had with it.

If your clutch is ok, then the only other thing it could be is: the trans has synchronizers between gears. These synchronizers control the gears(they are like a guide for the gear, so the gear can't grind as it moves from one gear to the next) , so when you hear the grind between the 3rd & 4th gear the synchronizer is bad causing the gear to grind as it is switched.

Mazda 2300 grindes when shifting into 4th

4th gear is not a gear as such but a coulping of the input and out put shafts to make a complete shaft
If there is a problem moving this coupling it indicates a syncro ring problem or spigot bearing failure in the end of the input shaft
either way it amounts to a gear box removal and pull down for repairs.

N16 manual makes a whiring noise when slowing down from 60kph in 4th, stops when put into nuetral

sounds like a bearing is on the way out in the gearbox, nothing really to worry about yet, if it is still going into gear, and not making a grinding noise.

mine makes a whirring noise when accelerating through 1-3rd gears.

It's when there is grinding and growling in the gear box that you need to worry.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire that has problems shifting into gear. (manual trany). Have to force into 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and especially in reverse. Will grind going into reverse. Have to turn off...

Sounds like the clutch is going out. I would check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. Also check the clutch master cylinder fluid level.

I have a 1997 toyota rav4 manual 4X4 , Everytime I shift up into 4th gear it does a slight grind but it doesn't do it down shifting.

Sounds like you have a scrinco stuck or worn out and the way you will get away with out grinding till you can get it done is to drive it like the old cars and trucks and that is to double de clutch between 3rd and 4th
all you do is to clutch in pull into nutural clutch out and in again fast and in to 4th gear (simple).

Won't go into gear to drive. may be transmission?

If the clutch has never been changed most likely it is that. The way you can check it is by removing the transmission and looking at the clutch disc. It could be transmission syncros but I am willing to bet you just need a new clutch.
