Brother MFC 8840D Check Original Error

I had an installer from ComCast in to install cable internet, and he drilled into the attic right over top of my printer. I attempted to get all of the dirt and mess off the printer with a dustbuster. But, now it says to Check the Original - Remove Original and then press Stop key. There is no original in the machine. I have turned off the power to it, unplugged it from the wall, opened the cover and pressed the sensor buttom, turned the printer off and pressed Menu while turning it on. Nothing works. I can print, but I can't get the Copy button to light up, so I can't copy. Is there a solution?

Thanks
JKW

No, it is not still under warranty. It is 4 years old. How do I get into where the dirt might be to get it out?

  • cpajwilson Sep 06, 2008

I went to the site goodhacker recommended and tried to Reset through Menu, but that did not work. I think that there is probably dirt that was sucked into the machine when I made a copy and that is what the problem is, but I don't know how to open up the machine to get to wherever the dirt is. Any solutions?

I would turn on the printer and open the compartment door that holds the ink cartridges let the printer reset the cart. to the center and then remove turn off the printer! before you (look for dirt or drywall ) and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it to remove any foreign objects.

Now put the ink back in turn on the power and close the lid.

The printer may ask you if this is new or used or original ink SAY USED and YES orginal this should help >

Its the problem of dirt ,but opening the device to clean the dirt is quite difficult as it is very delicate inside to handel it .calling a technician is very much advisable because he will do it properly and it will be safe .it will not cost u much as its the case of servicing the printer ,the cost will be not more then service charge.as if you do and some thing goes wrong the parts damaged are very costly more then a service charge for sure.
thanks.

As you said, printer was working fine before this issue, so simple solution is pick air-blower and blow air inside printer and make sure there is not dust left inside. then power up and try.

That is probably caused from dust inside the machine.
Unplug the printer for 12 or 20 minutes.
Remove the toner and put it back.
See if this work.

Just got a new computer w/windows 7 and now my brother mfc-8840D won't scan to pdf now? Any ideas on a solution to fix?

How to get a MFC-8840/D/DN to scan to Windows 7 over the network or by USB:

First - Download the Windows Vista Full Driver & Software Package from Brother: Brother MFC-8840DN driver download page

Install the drivers using a custom install - pick only the Network scanning drivers, unless you want the other junk - no promises on how well the other stuff works.
-------
Alternatively, if connecting the MFC-8840DN to Windows 7 by USB, download the Printer and Scanner Driver for Local Connection. It is a separate download. Install only the Scanner driver.
-------

Once the Vista scanner driver is installed, you can test by running the built-in Windows 7 Scanner Wizard. Here are instructions on how to test.

As far as conversion to PDF, that will depend on the software. I am not sure if the Control Center or Paperport softwares work on Windows 7. I have not tried those. I have found that freeware STP will works fine.
Here is a link to the STP homepage.
Here is a link to how to use STP with the Brother MFC-8840DN

How to remove back corner panel at feeder cable in Brother MFC 8840D

If you mean the top left of the doc. feeder, you remove the cover by flexing slightly, remove a phillips screw, lift the scanner cover and there's a square hole on the lid with one of those flex clip retainers that you use a screwdriver to lift.

Can't scan to PC with Brother MFC 8840D

My guess is a driver problem. I'm assuming you can print to it, so you know the USB connection is good. And you can make a copy (I assume), so you know the scanner mechanism and its connection with the rest of the machine works.
The scanner driver is separate from the printer driver. It's entirely possible to install and use the printer without having loaded the scanner driver. Best bet is to unplug the unit from your computer, then uninstall it completely from Windows. There may be an Uninstall program listed under Brother in your Start menu...All Programs... Or go to Start...Settings...Control Panel (or however your version of Windows get there) and open your Scanners and Cameras folder. If you find the Brother machine in there, Select it and click Remove. Do the same in the Printers folder.
Don't plug your machine back in until you have reinstalled the drivers. Go to www.brother-usa.com, and in the Service & Support box on the right, click Downloads. That will take you to a page where you'll select Multi-Function as your Product Group, then the model.
You'll get two lists of links. Forget Manuals, look at Drivers on the right.
Under Type of Software, click ALL. Select your OS.
You'll get a list of drivers and utilities for your model. Select the Full Package. Brother makes you accept the Terms of Use, then starts the download.
Look for Setup.exe in the main directory, or you may need to browse folders labeled with different language abbreviations to find it.
Start the installation, and don't plug your USB cable in until the computer tells you to. it will install the printer first, then return to install the scanner. It may require you to restart Windows more than once. Sorry.
Once you've suffered through all that it should be fine.

I am reinstalling my Brother MFC

What is the exact problem with reinstalling the Brother MPC?
Is it the printer driver or the cable connection?
To install the printer drivers, just insert the CD that came with the printer into your computer and follow the on screen instructions.
