Hi - What you see is the fan that cools the main processor:

compaq nx9010 - 4b1bfcb.jpg

It will spin to cool the processor when it gets hot so depending on the surrounding air temperature it may not spin. Usually you can feel it spin up briefly when the machine turns on, try placing your hand over the vent when you switch on. If the laptop seems to be running hot & the fan does not spin then you need to get it looked at as overheating will cause a failure in time.

That fan is important for cooling the laptop's cpu. without it there can be serious damage to the cpu (the brains of the computer). usually it will shut off before there is damage to cpu (thermal shutdown) but not always. have the fan replaced or the dirt and dust cleaned out and perhaps that is all that is stopping it.

Some laptops have fans controlled by temperature but even then, they normally will be turning at low speed when you first turn the unit on. In a laptop, that small fan may be the only one preventing the premature death of the processor or other hot-running ICs. Desktop PCs have at least two fans; one in the power supply unit, the other mounted atop the microprocessor.

With the power off, use a prod to see if the fan blades will turn easily. Look at it too with a flashlight to see if it is maybe full of dust clumps that you could remove with tweezers. If it seems sticky, it needs to be replaced; they do not generate enough torque to overcome dust bunnies or bearings that drag on the motor shaft.
No microprocessor runs without generating heat, sometimes a whole lot of heat so the fan is necessary to its survival. I wouldn't use the unit until the fan question is resolved.

Hello, this is the inside of your laptop:

ddbb582.jpg

So the fan you see at the rear pulls in cool air for the main processor & it exhausts on the left hand side through a grill which you can see. It should spin up on power up of the laptop & you should fell air moving out of this vent. It is most likely temperature controlled so will only come on when the processor gets hot. If the laptop is running hot and the fan is not spinning you need to have it checked.

Hp pavillon is roasting hot fan working but not cooling any ideas

Put something between the table and the notebook PC so that there is some ventilation. This might cool down the notebook. That is what I do for my Thoshiba laptop. Another option is you can buy something that is made specifically for this purpose. It is a small square shaped plastic sheet like thing which as a few small fans in it. The fan takes it power from usb port. The whole thing is about 7or 8(maybe even lesser) mm thick. Price around $20. Or else buy the smallest fan that runs on 110v (if your normal power is 110V AC) you can get and put it behind the notebook facing outwards. Idea is to exhaust the hot air from the surrounding of the notebook.

HP Compaq nx9010 CD drive replacement

You are correct.
The screws for the dvd drive is under the keyboard.
there should be 2 tabs one above the f4 and the other above f12 take a regular head screw driver put it where those tabs are and gently pull down towards the touchpad and the keyboard should come up easily.
Now under that keyboard in the center you will see a opening and inside that opening you will see 1 philip head screw remove that by turning counter clockwise.
Right below where you removed that screw you will see another opening which has another philps head screw in it.
Remove that screw counter clockwise and the dvd rom should pull straight out with ease.
To put it back together just reverse the steps.
If you need further assistance do not hesitate to ask.

You may have incompatible memory module. Just put in one memory module in at a time to see if it boots up, this will determine which module was not compatible.
