You may have a program that starts up automatically preventing you from coming out of sleep mode.
Try this
Holding down shift during the startup process to bypasses the startup group items. Put it to sleep, if it works than this indicates that something in the startup group is causing the problem.
At that point you would go into MSCONFIG and do some trouble shooting turning one thing on at a time. I can give you details if you need them.

Put my toshiba laptop into sleep mode closed the lid, reopened it within seconds, and now the laptop will not come back on

Reboot the laptop, go to control panel > power options > go through the settings, especially what does the computer do when lid is closed and change the setting to "do nothing", turn off hibernation if it is on. Change other settings to now allow the computer to go to sleep, just let it run until you decide to turn it all the way off. Sleep mode and Hibernation cause more problems than do good.

Hi,
This is a Hibernation problem,
Turn off your Hibernation settings in control panel
Power options.
choose a different Power setting.

You will not have the problem,
Alot of PCs suffer this problem

Laptop apprears to go into sleep mode while I'm using it

To my knowledge it could be hibernate mode for laptops to save battery life when not plugged into the wall, try pressing the power button, my Compaq did that too. Also don't hold down the power button as after 5 seconds it just shuts off the laptop, unless you wanna do that.
