How do i use the scanner on a hp psc 1510v all in one printer-fax-scan. i bought this about 3 years ago and never used the scanner and would like to now. thank you.

What OS do you have? If you have a Windows XP or 2000, download and install the full-featured software and use the HP software to scan.

If you have Vista and Win 7, HP doesn't have a full-software driver package. You will be using the drivers built into the OS.

For Vista, you can scan using the Windows Photo Gallery (File, Import from Scanner) or Paint (File, From Scanner or Camera) and with some versions Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan, File, Scan).

If you have Windows 7, Paint and Windows Fax and Scan will let you access the images/documents on the scanner.

In all cases, a good cable and ports will make scanning much less frustrating.

faxing,scanning and copying use the same mechanism,thts the scanner,if its doing it intermittently you can try a reset on the printer.see if tht works.

This is a hardware issue with the printer honestly.
The connectivity between your printer is lost which means that your printer is really old and the signal strength is not getting caught by your printer as per the port of the printer.
Call in to hp at 1800-474-6836 and go in for an upgrade printer that you will get with a 50% discount and also they call it refurbished but thats **** no one else has used it,it has just gone back to the factory for re-testing since a company realises they bought too many printers in bulk and need to send one back.
Also go in for an extended service plan which will cover your warranty for another three years.
In the upgrade try getting the photosmart c8180 or if you also want the fax go for the photosmart c7280.

Scanning Use one of the following three methods to scan a document. Method one: Scanning with Windows Photo Gallery

3. Click Windows Photo Gallery .
4. Click File , and then click Import From Scanner or Camera .

Method two: Scanning with Windows Fax and Scanning
NOTE: This feature works only with Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Enterprise.

4. Click New Scan .
5. Click File , and then click Scan .

Method three: Scanning with Paint

1. Click the Windows ( ) icon.
2. Click All Programs .
3. Click Accessories .
4. Click Paint .
5. Click File , and then click From Scanner or Camera .
6. Click Scan .

Scanner utility is pretty much come with the software. You can input the paper like you input for fax, either on the top scanner or the scanner itself and then just press scan on your printer. It will automatically scan to your computer. Please make sure your computer is connected to the printer.

If you have install HP s/w photosmart essential, you can scan material into coputer by selecting the get image function then select from scanner. A window will pop up. In which you can change the scanner parameter setup or accept the pre-scan quality and do the scan right away. Another method is in printer and fax folder, you can find the icon for scanner is located here too. Just click on the icon for scanner then you can get the scan result too. Hope this can help you.

You can scan by following steps :
For Windows XP:
To isolate the issue I suggest you to try scanning from the Windows Image acquisition(WIA) wizard on the computer.

Follow the below steps to Scan using WIA
1.Verify that the all-in-one product power is turned on and the printer cable is properly connected.

2.Click Start then Click All Programs then Click Accessories then Click Scanner and Camera Wizard.

3.Follow the Scanner and Camera Wizard instructions to scan images to the computer.
