Dry bearing noise

I have a 1995 Sportster 1200XL with 13,000 miles on it. I recently took it into Harley to get new tires, not that this maintenance had anything to do with current problem. I now have a sound from the transmission area like a dry bearing noise not all the time and is more noticeable at lower speeds. It does not make noise when cycle is not moving forward and it doesn't happen everytime. I'm also having a slow cranking, push to start issue any suggestions

I just had a mystery sqeak that took two different shops to find. Same symptoms, but mine turned out to be a bent piece of the part that indexes the brake pad on my front end. it was dragging on the rotor. The wrenchers at our local HD shop had no luck after 13 days, but the extreme sport jockies found it inside thirty minutes. Might not be your problem at all, but it could be.

Rear wheel bearings

Get a different shop to check all of the suspension components - if the struts both snapped, something is going on that's a much bigger concern than the wheel bearings. Look for bent control arms and other suspension components - check clearances and bushings everywhere in the rear, make sure nothing was installed backwards or forgotten. Struts don't just snap, and bearings should definitely not die every couple thousand miles. Also, have a dealer look at it, to make sure that things are installed properly. It won't be cheap there, but they might notice something that other shops routinely miss. I hate suggesting that ANYONE go to a dealership for service, but in this case, they're the most likely to notice something out of spec...

What oil do i use for a 99 1200xl sportster

You can use one or the other. If you use regular oil, Harley 20w50 goes in the oil tank and Formula + goes in the primary. If you use synthetic (Harley Syn 3) the same oil goes in both oil tank and primary.

Front end shakes

I have a 98 heritage springer. Took it to the dealer and said the front end shakes. Without looking at it, the shop manager asked how many miles I had. Just under 10k was the answer. He said "neck bearings, it's a known issue with springer front ends that the neck bearings go after 10k miles." Taking his word for it, I agreed to have the work done. Got the bike back, no change. He said, well it needs a new front tire then. Changed the tire, again, no change. Took it to another dealer. Explained my tale of woe and the manager actually got on it and rode it. Agreeing there was something wrong, they took it in, jacked it up and actually looked at it. Turned out the rim was bent. So after all the BS at the first shop, it turns out they replaced the neck bearings and installed a new front tire on A BENT RIM! Start with the simple stuff first. Check the front wheel balance and rim straightness before diving into bearings.

Will the front wheel off of 2000 sportster fit 1995 sportster?

Hello, No a 2000-up Wheel has "Sealed Bearings" and the Lip around where the Disc Rotor Bolts is Larger (2.200") than the 1995 Wheel which has a Lip around where the Disc Rotor Bolts is 2.000". Also The width of the 2000-up Wheel will be a little Wider (about .200" = a little under 1/4"). The Wheels from 1984-1999 will be the Same for the Same Model of Harley. All Harley Wheels from 1973-1999 used 3/4" "Timken" Bearing (Tapered Caged Rollers), Wheels 2000-Up used "Sealed Bearings" 3/4" & 1" I.D. and in 2008 some started using 25mm Wheel Bearings. Anything is Possible if you Own a Machine Shop and want to Bore out your 1995 Disc Brake Rotor I.D. to 2.220" and Make New Axle Spacers and Machine off aprox. .100" off each side of the Hub. My Harley 883 Sportster suddenly became stuck in 5th gear.

More than likely the shifter pawl has broken. Breaking in 5th gear is kind of unusual however, they usually break between first and second.

You'll have to remove the outer primary cover to look at the shifter pawl. It's partially covered by the clutch assembly.

2006 HD Sportster 1200XL rear cylinder not working

Sounds like an ignition problem. Probably a fowled or damaged spark plug or lose or damaged spark plug lead. Try new spark plugs, I only recommend NGK and you may need to fit hotter plugs for cold weather riding. Plugs are cheap and thats the best place to start.
