I have not done this personally, however I know you need the serial code from your original DVD drive to flash to the new drive, I believe you use a program called SAM KEY and its all done in DOS. I believe this site has the best tutorials. http://www.360mods.net/Downloads/details/id=61.html

When I put a game into the Xbox, the screen says reading. then "Open Tray" is displayed. Will not play games.

Hi you need to replace the whole dvd drive as the laser is not dropping down to stop scratching the disk, the problem with replacing the dvd drive is you need to get the exact same drive and their are 5 different types but when you do get another drive you need to take the circuit board off your drive and swap this with the circuit board on the new drive, its called the control board,

now the reason you need to put your control board on the new drive is due to the fact that the dvd drive is married to the firmware on your xbox so only that control board will work in your xbox so if you fitted a whole new drive and didnt swap the circuit board over thats on the bottom of the dvd drive your xbox would not play games ever again so you need to put your control board on the new drive to ensure your xbox recognises the dvd drive as being the one from the xbox.

their is no way around this without hacking the drive and doing this will ban you from xbox live so its not worth doing when you can just put your control board on the new drive and have a fully working xbox.

the fault you have is covered by warranty for 3 years so if your xbox is less than 3 years old get on the official web site and request a repair they will then send you another fully working xbox but you wont get much warranty as the one they will give you is a refurbished one. check the date on the back of your xbox to find out if you have any warranty left.

if your going to do the work yourself then use google and search for xbox 360 repair guide and this will tell you how to take the case off the xbox as its not easy to do, once you have the case of getting the dvd drive out is easy it just lifts up and you pull the wires out of the circuit board, you then need to check the make of dvd drive and get the same one then if you take the case off the dvd drive by undoing the 4 screws on the bottom you will see the circuit board that needs keeping with the xbox undo the wires and data ribbons and keep this circuit board as this will need to go on the new dvd drive.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

To play disc put it in an xbox 360 console.

when this happens, it either symbolizes that somehow, your tsop32 chip has corrupted in your dvd drive and has lost the dvd key, or you (someone) has attempted to flash the firmware on the dvd drive and it has ended in a failure and destroyed the initial firmware. basicly, if you have your dvd key, you can try to reflash the drive with working firmware (tutorials can be found everywhere) or, if you have warrenty left, send it in. if all else fails, find a person who knows how to disassemble an xbox 360 + dvd drive, desolder the tsop32 chip, and rip the firmware. this can be costly though, and you'll need a new dvd drive afterwords if your old one gets broken in the process. and if you can't get the dvd key, well, your 360 is now an expensive dvd player.

best of luck

My xbox will not read any of the discs that i put in. It reads the disc for a lilttle bit nd then says open tray. i have tried all of my games in it and it won't work

it seems your dvd drive lens died. if it is still under warranty send it to MS. if not, you need to replace the dvd drive. this might need reflashing the firmware of the replacement drive to make it work to your xbox 360.

It's Not The dvd drive key otherwise you'd get the three red light lights. It's most probably a bad firmware flash try and reflash it to the original firmware with the same dvd drive key and see if that works.
