You should be able to just pop the disk in and walk through the recommended install. Should even pop itself up once you put it in your computer.

I don't have dvd-rom icon under the file "my computer" and the computer doesn't show any response to dvd/cd on my HP laptop

Well I'm unsure of your operating system, so follow this link and put your OS, find the correct drivers.

Update BIOS, install media drivers. Reset computer and see what happens.

I recently bought a lite on sohc 5236k, unfortunately it didnt come with a manual so i am unsure of the installation and set up can you help dave

If its an internal burner, you have to open your computer case, remove your old drive and note the setting ont he back, the "jumper" will be on either M, S or CS. Select the same setting on your new drive and replace it inside the case. For step by step

Cannot access mmy dvd rom

completely uninstall product, reboot system and reinstall. ensure dvd rom is not attached before install.

If the system wont uninstall you need to reinstall software to correct error then uninstall to reinstall after reboot.

install dvd rom after you have correctly installed drivers.

Sometimes an internet update proves fatal with original install.

Automatic updates are not worth carrying out to be honest.
