I have the same problem (Canon S500), however, I recongised that if one calibrates the screen and the printer with an external colour-measuring device in order to create icc-profiles, everything works a lot better. You can assign icc-profiles for devices in the Colour-Sync-Utility. However, you do not have to create the profiles yourself (it is better, but...); sometimes you can download them somewhere on the Internet. (quite hard to find though)
Once you set up different profiles, the os translates colours a lot better between devices.
