LG XBR446 DVD Failure

The DVD drive seems to have completly failed. It cannot read DVDs whether burned by me or purchased movies. It will not record new DVDs. The drive always claims that the disk is invalid. It makes soft thumpy and clicking noises while trying to read the disks. The failure first occured while I was formatting a previously burned DVD. I have contacted LG support and the only two things they can do is "reset the unit", which I did myself and with the support person on the phone, or give me a local approved repair shop. I called 4 of the shops around my home and my work. Three of them had one excuse or other and would not look at my box. The third is always an answering machine and I have never been able to talk to a human. My parts warrantee has not run out yet and I would like to get it fixed before it does.

Sorry Jexx and Timm LG has nothing to do with Samsung. LG was at one time called Goldstar Electronics. Just thought I would bring ya both up to speed.

Yeah, the pickup is bad, definitely. Especially by the clicking noises you're hearing. I have no idea why the local repair centers won't look at it, possibly they might not be authorized to repair LG/Samsung? Call LG again and tell them about the service centers that are giving you excuses and LG will talk to the service centers themselves. It makes the service centers look bad and they'll usually look at your unit.

Re: LG XBR446 DVD Failure

Before you do anything I'd advise a lens cleaner. A unit with a stray piece of lint or dust on the lens can cause this hunt and seek problem. They're not expensive but just buy a decent quality one. It's worth a try.

Hello, My Philips DVDR7300H has a recording error after burning to dvd - burns VERY Slowly, and then gets hung on 95% - then "Disk Error" and the disk is then unreadable. It reads other previously recorded...

This happens with a number of drives.
1. DVD Dye type - but as you have tried DVDs from a batch that works seems unlikely.
2. Some drives dont like +R or -R If using +R try -R etc. Also some drives have problems with RW's used previously
3. Drive head travel is faulty. Sometimes only recording a max of 4Gb or 90% on a disk works OK.
Good Luck

Lg dvd recorder/vhs combo doesn't read dvds

Buy a DVD cleaning kit follow the instructions, sometimes brings it back to life. If no change! the assembly will need to be replaced,"not cost effective" cheaper to replace.

I own the LG DVD Recorder/Video Cassette Recorder (model LGXBR446). The problem I am encountering is, it plays some DVDs but on others I keep getting "Unknown disk, please, check disk again"...

Hello ethiosoft,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

I would start with a DVD cleaner kit for the player. Chances are, if the drive worked before, then it will again; after being cleaned.
If the issue persists, then the DVD drive is failing. Chances are at that point, it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit then just the DVD drive.

Have a great day!

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO RECORD

Well it depends on what you're recording. If you're trying to record from the T.V. your going to have issues because of the recent switch to digital. If you're recording from homemade VHS to DVD however just put in your VHS, then your blank DVD and hit record. There should be some on screen instructions displayed.
Hope it Helps! -Joe
Also you'll probably also have issues trying to convert your old VHS movie collection to DVD because most of the movies would probably be copyright protected.

I used a disk cleaner because I kept getting a "No Disc" message after putting one in for recording. (same disc I had used previously that worked). It still reads no disc, then I put a recorded movie in and...

It sounds like the unit may be beginning to fail. DVDs are created in one of two ways - they are either burned (when you create one with the recorder) or they are stamped (most commercial DVDs are created from a master this way.) As the unit ages, the strength of the laser used to "read" the DVD begins to get weaker and weaker, eventually becoming too weak to read even the best DVDs. Not all commercial DVDs are created equally, which means some may have a deeper, neater pit pressed into the substrate making it possible for a weak signal to get reflected and read by the hardware (hence, you will experience the ability the read some commercial DVDs and not others.)

DVDs you create at home creates the "pits" by focusing the laser beam on a dye layer and causing a dye to change from translucent to opaque. Where the dye is translucent the laser beam is reflected back to the reader and where it is opaque, not. We get the 0 and 1 state that digital signals use to reproduce/transmit signals in this way.

You may be able to get the unit serviced and have the board that sends/receives the laser beam replaced - but that may be as expensive as buying a new unit, complete with warranty.

Will play discs burned from hdd but not commercial movie type dvd

The solution is simple.I rang LG service (so called - LOL)
Asked for a fix or reset method. (Which can be done but they won't tell novices how)
Got no joy, so now I will bin it,and spend the rest of my days telling people to avoid LG.
After all the posts I have since read about the same problem on various LG models,it is obvious their product sucks, they know it does, but won't accept the responsibility.
If I stop 4 people buying their ****,that's at least $1000 they miss out on.
If the process snowballs,how much then$$ ?
It would cost me $120 just to get it to and pick it up from the repair place.
Plus parts and labour added.
Before buying an LG DVD recorder go online and check out how many dissatisfied customers there are. In short, DO NOT BUY !!

Is there a fool-proof method od creating dvd movies that read as well as store bought dvd movies?

Short answer: Not really.

Even if you were to author DVD content identical to an unprotected mass-produced disc, unless you actually send it to replication to get a real DVD and not a burned one, you're still going to have some degree of uncertainty on whether the media can be read in all DVD players.

Newer DVD players are generally more tolerant about reading burned DVDs. Olders ones tend to have more problems.

It is important that you use good-quality media as well. Not all DVD-recordable media has the same readability.

Will This DVD Recorder Burn DVDs from a Desktop?

Ive never seen a standalone DVD recorder that can connect to a pc unless it had a Hard Drive. This model is a Target exclusive company. These devices are designed to record video direct from either Antenna,Cable,VCR,or something such as a game console, or camcorder.

Hope this helps!
