Are NU-Kote and Pelikan cartridges any good?

By Melissa - usenet poster

I recently bought both a color and b/w NuKote refill kit for the hp 722c.  I printed out a few photos with an original hp color cartridge prior to refilling it.  After refilling all 3 colors, I printed out the same photos again.  I couldn't tell the difference.  The only problem is that the refilled color cartridge only lasted another week before the yellow channel clogged or something.  Nothing could bring it back.

Later, I tried to refill a black cartridge, but it leaked near the printhead something terrible.  Luckily it leaked before I put it back in the printer.

No more refill cartidges for me.  I'm back to original hp and am having no problems aside from less money in my wallet.

Does anyone have experience using NU-Kote ink cartridges? Is the ink quality as good as the printer manufacturer's cartridges? Any printer problems or printing problems? Printers in this case are an old Epson Stylus Color 800 and a newer HP 970cse. The epson is used for general text and some graphics, no photos. The HP is used for photos and some text and graphics. There's two printers because I wanted the HP for photo printing but there's nothing wrong with the Epson SC 800 for everything else. The cost of ink is aggravating but I don't want to sacrifice quality. I realize both Epson and HP say the warranty is gone if I use other than their inks. For the Epson, that's not a problem, I think the warranty's long gone past anyhow. The HP however is just a few months old.

The one time I bought a no-name generic cartridge for the Epson I dang near destroyed the printer. I had ink everywhere, saturating the paper (this was a "normal" quality text print) plus all over inside the printer. After practically disassembling the printer for cleaning I still had a month of streaks before it finally got cleaned out. That was my last non-manufacturer's ink cartridge purchase. But NU-Kote seems to have been around awhile and is available in a number of local stores. However, I haven't checked to see if they have cartridges for either of my printers. I'm still interested in your experiences, though.

Thanks.

Steve, thanks for the reply. That's the kind of information I am looking for. As I noted, I had some serious problems with a non-name generic brand on my older Epson printer so have shied away from non-mfr inks. But the prevalence of nu-kote and pelikan in the local stores caused me to wonder if I should rethink my position. You answered my questions about refills, now hopefully someone will post their experience with replacements (rather than refills) from nu-kote and pelikan.

Thanks again.
