Hard Starting Dometic Rooftop AC unit

My Dometic AC has trouble starting after it has inactive for a month or more. The fan will run, but the compressor will not fully start. It hums momentarily then stops repeating every two minutes or so. This will continue for up to an hour until it finally starts. There is a hot electrical smell while this is going on too. Once the compressor finally kicks over, it runs fine for the entire trip until it is shut down for another month or so. Is this a weak start capacitor or a bad compressor?
Thanks for the help,

I have a 1997 Trek, model 2830. which has a 3.6kw LP onen generator, we replaced the ageing 13500btu AC unit with a new Dometic 15000btu unit. According to the specs. the new unit drew the same amount of current during start up and running. Now when the new unit cycles to fast, less than 2 minutes, it drags the generator down and then blows the breaker on the generator. all works fine with shore power.

Question: Will the start up kit help solve the problem? I think for the price it can't hurt.

Question: Can I add some type of delay to the thermostat?

Sounds like your compressor is actually bad. if it was a capacitor, it would have either already burned up which you would smell smoke and you might see it come out of the vent and the compressor would no longer function, or the capacitor is completely dead. They don't always explode or burn up, sometimes they just short out internally.

the other question with the generator. you need a hard start capacitor kit. they come with a start delay relay and don't cost very much. it will prolong the life of the compressor and they are very easy to install.

Just add a$10:00 hard start kit to the compressor.

The AC makes a humming sound when starting the fan. If I spin it by hand it runs. Model 620315.321 serial 90716722.

The humming sound is the motor trying to start, if you turn it by hand, usually they will run. it sounds like the motor for fan needs cleaning and oiling. God-Bless ya all!

Bad run capacitor or bad compressor. If you hear an occasional click from the compressor try a new run cap and then a hard start kit. Otherwise it's more economical to purchase a new unit.

Have a 93 airstream camper with a Dometic AC unit . When I tuun the unit on either to heat or air,it brings the house voltage down to the red zone but does come on but seems to be draining the power.

Does the fan seem to labor when starting up. (basically starts up but seems slow to get up to speed?) Then when fan is turning at normal speed, the power inside seems to go back to normal?

I have my dometic Rooftop ac unit. The heatstrip/fan run perfectly but when I turn on the ac...the fan runs good but when the compressor kicks on it just hums.

The compressor coming on does make a slight "humming" sound which is normal. Is the unit cooling properly? Do you think it is louder than before?

Relay (?) sticking Dometic RV rooftop AC

Go up on the roof of the unit and remove the AC Shroud. With the unit running, see if you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from. The only thing on the entire AC that would make that much of a vibration would be the fan motor. Not sure what would cause the fan motor to do this. The compressor may do that but only if the windings are bad and then it would not be cooling.
