Question about RCA R52WM24 52" HDTV Projection Television

First a convergense problem and after a new board was installed it works for

15-20 minutes and then screen goes black and light in off and one switch flickers and power goes on and off but not long enough for a picture. Some background bowed colored lines are occasionally visible as set goes on and off? I have invested $320 with a recognized RCA repairman who is now stumped. Can you help?

I'm sorry but I have a perfect picture during the 15-20 minutes that the TV operates and I think that there must be an electrical overheat somewhere. I think the bad picture tube is poor advice since I have a good picture after the convergence board was installed. TV goes off and then off and on with black background and faint bowed rainbow accross top of the picture.

Since I have two different opinions from two of your experts could I have a couple of other expert opinion before I consider spending a few thousand dollars on a new set after only 18 months with this one!

Buy yourself a can of compressed air. when the tv quits start spraying quick blasts of air on components ... when it comes back on you have found the defect.

the idea in that is you have an intermittent problem... the last time i ran into that it was a capacitor. i have no disparaging remarks for the repairman as intermittent failure is a pain to diagnose. if it is heat the blast of air will cool the component and the picture will come back on.

FIrst of all, in order to provide you with the best advise, I'll need a little more background info. I assume that the original problem was a convergence problem and that the convergence ICs were replaced. Am I correct? If so, please post the IC part number (STKxxx). Along with those ICs, there should have been a check of a number of low valued resistors in the same circuit as well as any pico fuses in the area. If the resistors have either opened up completely or significantly changed value, the circuit will not function correctly and the protection circuits may kick in shutting down the set.

Update this and we'll go on to the next steps.

Since you have replaced the entire convergence board, the low valued resistors should also be new. I would be looking in the 24V power supply area for a bad filter capacitor. If the cap starts to fail, the 24V may drop mimicing poor convergence. Check also for poor solder connections in that area.

Have you checked the supplies as I suggested? Please update this.

    Thanks,

This is a common issue, and it is almost always a high voltage circuit board problem, why? the greatest enemy of electronics is heat, so the parts that do the most work fail first. I have found that the repair cost so high that a new TV is the way to go, so you fix the first problem then a year later something else, just bite the bullet and buy a new LCD TV, they are cheap and very reliable.

Why does my screen go black

The set is shutting down the CRts for protection which is almost always a vertical deflection failure with that chassis if the audio still remains working when the pic drops out. Replacing the deflection board should solve the issue. You can get the ITC222A deflection board PSB260 from www.tvrepairworld.com

Hi.

It is probably a defective ballast board or a faulty PSU. The ballast is the high voltage power board connected to the lamp. The PSU is the board that supplies power in different voltages to the other internal parts. One of the DC lines from PSU goes straight to the ballast. The repair is done testing the voltage from PSU to ballast. The job must be done by a technician.

Hi,Yes your problem sounds like the DMD board. This is how it works: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dlp1.htm Basically the light of the lamp goes through a tunnel that carries a color wheel(rotating disc with a gamma of colors that creates the colors on your tv)then the light of the lamp goes through the DMD board which is a chip composed of around 2 million pixels that creates the images and colors. When it starts to fail it will create black bars, pixelation, color distortion or white dots on screens. Here's a video that will help you find where the DMd chip is located : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jr_9A5Xd2Q Have a blessed one!

The image leaves and the screen goes black.

Either the picture tubes are going, or they are dusty. Take apart the front grill and take off the black cut away behind the grill. Inspect the tubes and the circuit boards. If they are dusty blow them off with an air can duster. It might work and its free and takes 5 minutes.
