Hi...there,

It's seems your Thinkpad need a new inverter, due to a backlight inverter burnt out. Get a new one or repaired it. Good lucks!

Laptop turns on, goes to first screen which reads IBM TRHINKPAD. THEN FLASHES OFF TO NEXT SCREEN WHICH READS THE WINDOWS XP LOGO then it goes black and doesnt come back on

Your installation of Windows is most probably corrupted. Try pressing and holding the F8 button on your keyboard when the 'IBM THINKPAD" screen disappears. That should bring you to a Windows menu where you can select various modes. Select Safe Mode and press enter. If it boots, then you know that something's wrong with Windows and not the notebook itself. What have you installed prior to this problem? Maybe you should try uninstalling it while in safe mode, and then try starting up Windows normally again.

If your windows doesn't start anyway, you should get some live OS (OS that can boot from CD) like Ubuntu or Puppy Linux, so you can save the data from C: partition (burn it or copy it elsewhere) and then reinstall your copy of Windows XP.

When I connected an external VGA monitor to my IBM thinkpad 760 C the external monitor works.. but the internal/original monitor goes black what to do?

It's supposed to do that. The internal VGA card doesn't have enough power to support both screens at higher resolutions than intended.

LG Flatron L177WSB-how would I use my newly purchased unit after switching it on, LG logo appears followed by the Power Saving Mode it all goes black on the screen.

Hi, the Power Saving Mode, turns the screen off to conserve energy. On the remote, press Menu, and scan to Power Saving Mode. You can change the amount of time, when the Screen turn-off, the TV shut-off etc. You can set the time to (5 min) to, (never, turn-off). This should help with your problem. Thanks paul7of9

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

Ibm t42 display turns off as if I had shutdown

You can test the computer this way. Connect the video output at the back of the laptop's base to a known working monitor. If the problem disappears completely then you know it is a screen problem, mostly likely. But if the same thing happens with the known working monitor connected to the Thinkpad, then you very likely have the BGA problem, a part that was soldered less than well (due to the restriction of lead not being allowed in the solder due to government regulations). And it may also be caused by flexing the base due to moving the laptop with poor support for its weight and resulting motherboard flex on rather delicate microsoldering. There are several services that "reball" the Ball Grid Assembly, and there are motherboards available as well that can replace the non-working ones. This is not a cheap fix to undertake but it can be done.

IBM Thinkpad T40 randomly shuts off

did the monitor turn off when it is in idle mode? it might be the monitor power options (it might have been set that when it is idle for an X minutes it will turn off). check the monitor power settings.
