Fix Only Worked i week

My 18 mos. old 37" flat screen from Polaroid would not turn on other than a blue light. I read of a fix on this site by stiv0, tried it and it worked! But tonight (1 wk later0 it totally shut off. There is no red or blue light and my cable box is still on, but not the TV..Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Maybe there is something else we can check out and replace? I am so disgusted I don't know what else to do. Thanks in advance, Carol in TN

My tv does sort of the same thing. Was working fine until we returned from vacation. We know the power went out in our neighborhood once while we were gone - nothing else happened. The power button doesn't work and we have to unplug the tv to have it turn off. The rest of the time the blue light flashes with barely any sound, but some channel sounds and more static than any other sound. No picture. The tv is just a couple of years old.

37" HDTV LCD Polaroid FLM3738 2 years old. Occasionally the blue light would turn and the picture would come on with no sound. There would be a static sounding popping noise so you knew when it was going to happen. The last month the blue light turns on, no picture and it will not turn off either by the remote or from the power button on the side of the TV. I have to turn the power bar off and reset. Tonight I had the feed back static noise another writer described and after that no picture at all. This is very discouraging to hear all of these complaints. I believe we have a "lemon TV" situation. I am not a litigous person, but if some assistance is not provided to help correct the situation, count me in on a civil suit. I will copy this to the Better Business Bureau and the local TV station that follows up on situations such as this. Marie Gerrard Huntington, Indiana

You may need a new power supply, I would check the power supply fuse where the ac plugs into the tv, you have to pry it out from behind the tv, stiv0s' fix would return 24v to the lcd backlight hence you would have sound but no picture. if the red light doesnt come on at all that would mean the 5v required for standby isnt getting to the mainboard. there is actually a fuse soldered onto the power supply right where the AC cord plugs in. if you had a meter you could check that to see if the fuse is is burnt out.

Hello caroltiki,

If I may ask what was the fix suggested to you? What may have happened, is something that often happens. Remember when something malfunctions, it usually does so for a reason, until that reason is exposed any repairs will be temporary. I usually tell people to have their sets checked out be a qualified TV technician which to me is the best advice. However if the person wants to do it themselves I usually offer troubleshooting help, not "shotgunning" help. Shotgunning is what caused you to seek a repair without the benefit of troubleshooting, so if you want me to help you do this yourself, I do require that you have some understanding of electronics, because I am going to have you take measurements and readings if you have the equipment to do so.

I hope this helps

Thank you,

There is a post by Stivo on this board that has helped many fix this type of problem. There are two capacitors on the power supply board that go bad and if replaced can fix this problem . The parts can be purchased at your local Radio Shack for about five dollars or less. I just did it today and it worked!!!

Tip

37" Polaroid Flat Panel with Blue light but NO PICTURE

Hey guys,

I'm still in the middle of getting capacitors so that I can try Stiv0's suggestions and I think it will work because the back of the old capacitors were swollen like the pictures shown. I had trouble finding the capacitors because the electronics stores don't want to sell customers parts because they can't charge ridiculous prices for 10 minutes of work. I ended up finding the 1000uf (microfarad) 10 volt capacitors on a website for $1 per package of 6. There is a minimum $10 purchase for delivery so I'll have 60 in a few days which isn't bad. After shipping it'll only cost $17 to fix my TV. Here is the website if you are having the same problems I am.

If radio shack or the electronics stores won't sell the capacitors to you give this a shot.
