Question about Power Generators

Coleman powermate 6250 generator will not start

About a year or so ago, I purchased a Coleman Powermate 6250 premium pus 5000 watt generator from an individual. It has remained in the original unopend box until today. I added fresh fuel and SAE 30 oil and attempted to start it. Nothing -- seems as though it is not getting gas. I checked the shut off to ensure it was in the correct position and even pulled the hose to verify. I also loosened the fuel bowl and as I did gas poured out -- so there is gas at least there. I sprayed starter fluid into the carb and it will fire up for a few seconds and the shut off agin. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton 10 HP OVH. The manual is pretty much useless -- has no trouble shooting tips at all. Any help is appreciated!!

I took off the fuel bowl and it looks like the float is OK and not stuck. Is there a way to verify -- it seems to be moving freely? Also, The generator was stored without fuel or oil -- kept in the box straight from the manufacturer.

I pulled the spark plug and reconnected it and then pulled the starter a few times -- there is no visible spark. It has a on/off switch andit is also equipped with an oil sensor that will not allow the engine to be started if the oil is low -- possibly this sensor is inop/stuck -- is there a way to by pass it?

I have one of these generators, and I can tell you that at least once a year, I have to pull the petcock type assembly off tank, and clean it. I also drain and clean the tank. It gets a sediment build up, and the petcock system isn't the greatest in the world. I'm going to say that you either have a problem in the petcock type assembly, or you have a stuck jet in the carb, either of these can happen with it sitting for the long period of time. Start by removing the fuel line to the carb and checking the fuel flow. Sounds like you may have already done this, I'm unclear on that. Then I would remove the carb, and soak it overnight in a penetrating oil. This will loosen up any rust or parts that may be sticking. One other thing you may consider, depending on where you live, you may have a mud dauber or wasp nest in the intake or other critical area of the engine. I still get amazed at where I find mud dauber nests occasionally, the little buggers seem to be able to get anywhere.

If you didn't have any spark, then it wouldn't run when you primed the carb. If it's not getting a spark now, then it could be a ground wire, or the other two parts you mentioned (oil sensor, and kill switch) You can bypass the kill be removing it. It simply creates a connection and grounds out the spark. The oil sensor works a little differently, but with the same basic principle. I think it's a breaking switch, that uses the oil to create the continuous connection, when the oil is low it breaks the connection and grounds out the spark. With the sensor, you will have to jumper the leads in the connector to bypass it.

If found an article with almost the same problem as yours. You don't have the same generator model but the troubleshooting tips I believe is really helpful since you said the manual has no troubleshooting tips at all. There troubleshooting information on the link will only make sense and will only guide you on identifying the main cause but doesn't necessarily apply exactly to your generator's model. Check it HERE

Is there a kill switch? there should be. did you check to make sure you had spark?is there a primer pump for the carb?is it choking properly?is the coil wire hooked up as it should be? this includes not only the plug wire but the wire to ground and if applicable the kill switch? check the air gap with a feeler gauge the gap should be no more then .012 and no less than .010 these are a few options to check out. keep me posted.

Was it stored with fuel in it ?

Robert

almost sounds like a stuck float in the carb.

a couple things... i presume you have already put it back together. but dirt in the fuel line will not allow fuel thru and that appears to be the problem.... the float controls a tiny valve... the theory is the float shuts off the fuel supply to avoid fuel spillage. that valve is i believe copper. if you can move it with something to insure it has free movement as well that may be the solution. it could possibly have become stuck. whatever you use to move it do NOT scratch it. if you have trouble locating it.

look where the float bowl hinges. there will be a tab and it preses up or down (whichever way it moves) under that you will see a round pin shaped part. that has to be able to move freely to allow gas to go past it.

ensure there is proper movement of the float up and down.

if that appears fine... attempt to start it a few times.... afterward pull the spark plug... is it wet (fuel) ?

as someone mentioned before... kill switch is set in the right position to start. odd that it would run with spray thru the carb and suddenly it has no spark.

Evidently carb is not getting enough fuel or air.

This generatior should have an air filter, check that the air intake is not obstructed, and if there is air filter check it.

If the generator started by dropping fuel directly into the carb, then is a fuelling problem.
Check that fuel is being pumped into the carb, if fuel is being pumped there may be not enough pressure, or there may be an obstruction cutting fuel occasionally.
If fuel is not being pumped at all you will probably need to replace fuel pump.
If fuel pump is pulled by belt, check that serpentine belt is in tension.
If fuel is running check the fuel lines for obstructions.
Check that hose coming from fuel tank is not obstructed with oxide and dirt, eventually blow it with a compressor.

There should also be a plastic fuel filter on the fuel line, try removing it to test the lines, if it is obstructing the flow, replace it.

What weight oil do I use for a 5000 watt Coleman generator

Depends on the temperature where yuo will operate it, but a good multi-viscosity oil like 10W-30 should work. 5W-30 for cold climates.

You may have just lost residual magnetism in your rotor. Start genset then apply 12 vdc to 120 v outlet for less the 1 seconds. This will be enought to restore the residual magnetism to the rotor and the unit should be producing power now.

Three year old coleman 5000/6250 generator. High

Your RPM's are too high. There is no voltage regulator in coleman generators (generator is actually made by generac) and is 100% dependent on engine speed. There is a screw under the tank when your looking in from the recoil side. It controls the governor arm. Screw it in and it incresses the rpm, out decrease. Plug something in that draws a decent load while setting the rpms since you want it to put out 120 and 240 underload. Your idle voltage does not matter.

How many gal tank is the Powermate 6250 10 KW

Nearly all of the Powermates have the same 5 gallon fuel tank.
I'm a little confused, the Powermate 6250s are all 5Kw generators with 6250 watt surge ratings. Is yours really a 10Kw or did I misunderstand which generator you have?
