Rewatch your dvd that came with your machine. If, you do not have that, read the manual. Sometimes you have the thread feeding the wrong way, make sure that it unwinds toward you. Also, check your needle, change if necessary. Make sure the flat side faces the rear of the machine and is inserted all the way up.

I have a Singer

Which stitch are you using?

To check thread tension for straight stitches, use different colors of thread in your top thread and bobbin. If the top thread shows on the bottom of the fabric, turn the dial counter-clockwise (towards a lower number). If the bottom thread shows on the top, turn the dial clockwise. Do not adjust the tension too much (for example, go from 2 to 2.5 if increasing the tension) at a time; test another set of stitches. Alternatively, you can adjust the bobbin tension in the reverse directions. However, it's very easy to damage the set screw in the bobbin case so do this as a last resort. Since this is a vertical bobbin case, put the bobbin in and hold onto the thread. If the thread moves when you dangle the bobbin case, tighten the screw. Loosen the screw if the thread doesn't pull out of the bobbin when you hold the unit.

For zig-zag decorative stitches lower the tension until the puckering stops. Usually the top thread will show on the bottom of the fabric.

If the tension is not changing when you turn the dial, make sure that the presser foot is down. The sewing machine may need repair. The tension mechanism depends on a spring and that can break. See the Singer site for a parts breakdown and contact your Singer dealer for the parts.

If the top and bottom fabric are not moving at the same rate, you can get a different type of puckering. You may want to get an even feed foot if there are several layers of fabric.

The manual for the 3116 is available from Singer: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/438_3116.pdf .

I hope this helps.

I have a singer simple 3116 sewing machine and it stitches loose upper threads. I?ve tried adjusting the tension, re threading, flipping the bobbin around, and even different fabric. But nothing seems to...

Insert a new needle, (flat side facing rear of machine), now totally rethread. Try this, with presser foot up, pull top thread, it should pull smoothly, now lower presser foot, the thread should barely move. This should seat the thread in the tension discs. If that doesn't work, call Singer at 1-800-4singer.

I either have no stitch at all or the thread on the bottom bunches up or the thread just comes outr of the needle . I have tried almost every setting and stitch but cannot fing the proper tension

It is in your top threading. Totally unthread, insert a new needle (flat side facing the rear of machine), now rethread, put the presser foot up, pull top thread, it should feed smoothly, now lower the presser foot, pull the thread, it should barely move. This should seat the thread in the tension discs. Put your tension at 3. Good luck

Hi! I have a singer simple 3116 sewing machine

It is the top threading that is giving you the problem not the bobbin thread. Try this, totally rethread, the machine. A new needle will not hurt either. Now with the presser foot up, pull on the top thread, it should feed smoothly, now lower the presser foot, pull the thread again, it should barely move. This usually will seat the thread in the tension discs.
Good luck and Merry Christmas

Bottom of stitch is bunched with alot of thread and machine jams

Try these time savers:
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no mater how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, then let me know, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.

I just got a singer simple 3116 and i can't get the stitches to look right. it looks like the top thread is too loose, but changing the tension doesn't change anything.

more than likely the thread is not firmly between the tension discs.  with the pressure foot up and the needle in highest position you should be able to pull thread with resistance.  If there is no resistance, most likely the thread tension is not being controlled.

Stitch is uneven, not straight, and tension off on top and bottom

on my industrial machine this was caused by the wrong size needle. the length was off just a fraction. just an idea, in case you bought generic needles or something.
