You are probably right; this sounds like a normal startup routine that puts some circuits to a test for function but in your case, it doesn't complete the test, indicating that something has failed.
Try pull the AC plug and ingoring it overnight to see if the condition will change. In most of the modern home systems, there are simple microprocessors to handle the many tasks available and, like any darned computer, they may trip over themselves now and then.
