Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

PS3 GPU Issues, pleaes help!

My PS3 will turn on and start up fine, but after about 5-10 minutes I'll begin getting green snow, just on the start up screen. If I put a game in, it gets worse with full screen crashing from regular black and white snow and it's jittery. This is bad because I am sure it's a GPU issue, and I fixed my XBOX 360 and two others with GPU issues, but don't have any idea how to fix my PS3 because I learned from reading how people fixed their 360's and no one has posted how to fix a PS3 (from what I can tell)! BTW, I am hooked up by HDMI but it's not a HDMI problem. Please help!

This is very annoying please help

It's usually an issue with the PS3 not being compatable with the LED TV you are hooking it up to. I have the same problem and Sony has not figured out a way to fix this problem yet. It IS a hardware issue so new software updates will NOT fix it. The thing with the PS3 is that it is made to run on 480i perfectly, but once you try to display the picture on a higher resolution there will be lags and problems like this one. So, until I find a solution I have mine hooked up to a 480i box-set TV and it works fine. I sugest you do the same, or just get an LCD TV or a Plasma TV none of which have LED backlighting.

This is a problem linked to your GPU (Graphics Processor) chip. It has become damaged, probably from the fall.

You will need to take it back to the technician and have him 'try' and reflow your GPU.

This repair has a very low success rate. Start making plans on getting a new PS3.

Alternatively, you can send it in to SONY for a refurbished unit. It will cost less than a newer model, but have less certainties and may fail as well. You will also have to wait a while (shipping and repair).

I'll turn it on and the green light will show, but then it blinks, turns yellow, then shuts down on its own.

THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO EXTREAM HEAT GENERATED BY THE 'GPU' WHICH IS NOT DISSSIPATED PROPERLY OR HEATSINK COMPOUND IS DRY

Red color turns green after 10 minutes of play. This happens with all my driving games including the new FORZA 3. In the begining it would take about 15 minutes to turn green and now it is only about 7 to...

Yes this is the GPU overheating you will get this and then it will go to freezing and then the red lights, you need to stop the heat build up you can do this yourself or you can send it in to get it fixed.

About 5 - 10 minutes into gaming, the screen will freeze usually with small green dots scattered across the screen? bad hdmi cable?

No, cables RARELY go bad. More than likely it's the GPU on the motherboard. It's getting too hot.

You need to get some compressed air and blow out all the dust. It's best to do it outside ;)

Also give it about a minute or two before powering up again.

It also helps to use the PS3 in a vertical position, heat is your enemy!

Let me know what happens after following my suggestions.

My system starts up fine, all icons act properly.. but after playing for fifteen to twenty minutes, it locks up. Then when I reboot it starts like a pixel seizure eventually whole screen turns into lines...

if there's pixilation problems only after 10-20 minutes, i'd say the gpu is overheating.

Now the real problem is if the gpu has been damaged due to the overheating and whats causing it to overheat in the first place.

The heatsinks on the ps3's are crazy so i'd push more towards the gpu failing, but it could be just a simple overheat problem.

They sell external fans for the ps3 that connect to an external power source. Try purchasing one of those, it will run you 30 bucks.

If it continues after that i'd push more towards the gpu's been damaged and your going to need service on it.

Hope this helps.

When I turn on my ps3 i only get sound. I replaced the HDMI cord and the problem still exsist.

please, try using an AV cable to verify possible problems with your GPU after you reset the AV settings to it's default : turn the system on by holding the on;off button .

if the screen comes on, then set the PS3 to work with HDMI but do not select the 1080p resolution .

else, contact Sony support centre for possible hardware issues checking (possible problem with GPU or with your HDMI output) .

Shows colors-lines-then freezes???

I have this problem with my 60 gig, I think its due to overheating, I took it apart and put some Artic Silver Thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and it played for about 6-7 hours but then started again. Could be due to overheating or possibly the GPU is going bad

Ps3 restarts itself (when it does work nothing on screen)

sounds like your ps3 has overheated. ask a good electronic repair shop to change the thermal compound between the cpu/gpu and the heat sync. let them know the gpu and cpu may need to be reflowed.

Tip: Keep your PS3 flat do not store standing on it side this will help prevent the thermal compund from moving as much

Disc stuck and then Ps3 system when turned on goes from green to yellow then blinking red

PS3 has overheated and the thermal compound between the cpu/gpu and heat sync need to be replaced. the gpu and cpu may need to be reflowed as well. Had the same problem and fixed mine. The thermal compound was pretty much gone when i opened up the system. Also dont keep your ps3 on its side leave it flat this will help keep the compound from moving as much.

Plays, freezes, green lines, won't come back on

It's a GPU problem. Are you comfortable opening up your PS3 or would you rather pay $150 through Sony?

Let me know.

In the meantime you can check out my PS3 blog for some tips, warnings, etc.
