Question about Magic Chef CTF2125 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Defrost Problem I have a problem with the defrost unit. I have a Magic Chef side-by-side unit that was purchased in 1995. Regardless of temperature setting, the back of the side freezer unit will eventually frost up. As frost accumulates on the back wall of the freezer, inside temperatures begin to warm up. When the inside termperature approaches 50 degrees I will turn off the refrigerator and thaw out the frost on the back wall of the freezer. Once everything is thawed I turn the refrigerator back on. The freezer remains clear of frost for about 2-3 weeks then frost accumulates again. This cycle has been repeated for a couple of years and much food has gone bad. Each time I thaw the unit the water pan at the bottom of the fresh food side will fill. The pan will collect water even if all of the ice has been removed from the freezer. The fan behind the back freezer wall is working. However, a narrow 1/4" strip hangs from the bottom of the fresh food door. This could be a magnetic strip that holds the door gasket. Air flow from the freezer to fresh food side appears to enter at the bottom, is forced up along the sides of the glass shelves, and recyled to the freezer at the top where the freezer fan is located. At one point, I thought overcroweded shelves were blocking the migration of air from the bottom along the sides to the top. However, clearing the shelves did not correct the problem. I've discounted leakage of cold air through a leak in the door gasket as the problem. I speculate it just doesn't account for enought loss to be the problem, or explain the pathology of the problem. However, I can feel a bit of air flow at the bottom of the fresh food side door. Instead, I have thought the problem was with the defrost unit itself. I guess there are three major components to the defrost unit. I tried putting a circuit tester on the defrost components, but did not get results I could interpret with confidence. It seemed to suggest the heater unit was OK, but cannot say with confidence. Any thoughts on diagnostic testing would be appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Make sure a piece of paper can be trapped between the door seal if not the seel is not tight enough. That would explain it taking so long to ice up. Another posibilty is to close to the back or side wall if you have space try to move it out just a little at a time. If it is overheating in the rear it can cause it to not operate properly.

Magic Chef Side by side...freezer side frosting and Refrigerator side not cooling

Your defrost timer, defrost thermostat and defrost heater need to be checked.
The heater and thermostat are inside the freezer behind the back freezer panel.
The timer is underneath the refrigerator either the left front or right rear.

How do I set the temperature?

Hello Elise, The Dial should be set to the middle number three (3) to start with and allow for 24 hours of running before you make any adjustments, either up or down.

The higher the number the colder the fridge temperature will be. Just remember that it takes almost a full day for the fridge compensate for any changes to the thermostat. Also, only make adjustments in the temperature setting by only 1 increment at a time (either up or down) and again, allow 24 hours before making further changes.

If your fridge has the red button in the center of the temperature dial, that is the manual defrost button. So if you've got a build up of ice on the freezer section, just push it and it will defrost the unit for up 2-4 hours.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Magic chef fridge, 50 - 55 degrees frost inside freezer. whats wrong and how do i fix it. no $$ for repair man. vacumed fan etc in bottom back side of fridge (was really dusty). just emptied food into...

You have one of 2 problems - 1. a bad defrost heating element; 2. a bad defrost timer. The heating element is in the freezer under the coil. The defrost time is probably in the refrigerator.

Whats the push in button in the center of temp. conrtol knob, on the dorm size model?

On this model, the push button in the center of the temperature control is for starting a manual defrost cycle.

If you see ice building up on the evaporator (the freezer section), you just push the button and the fridge will stop the cooling cycle and initiate a defrost cycle to melt the ice.

The unit will automatically start cooling after the pre-determined defrost cycle time has elapsed.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
