You just have to enter the WEP encryption that you have configured on the Belkin router to reconnect your laptop back to the wireless router. To verify the WEP of the router:

  • Open an Internet Explorer window on your computer and type in in the address bar. This will take you to the Belkin router's web based configuration page. If you are not able to open the page click here.
  • You will get a login page. Leave the password blank. Click Submit .
  • On the left side of the page, click Wireless Security or Security below Wireless .
  • Take note of the WEP key.
  • Click Logout in the top right hand corner.

How do I put an encryption on my linksys router?

Securing your wireless network is a simple process, which generally does not require a lot of time. This can be done by:
    • Enabling WEP or WPA on the Router
    • Enabling Wireless MAC filter on the Router
    • Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
NOTE: The wireless security modes available may vary depending on the model of the router and wireless adapter you are using.
    Enabling WEP on the Router
Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP) is a type of wirelesssecurity which does not change. It provides comparable confidentialityto a traditional wired network. There are two types of WEP you canchoose from:
    a. WEP 64-bit: This type of WEP consists of 10-hexadecimal codes. To enable WEP 64-bit, click here.
    b. WEP 128-bit:This type of WEP consists of 26-hexadecimal codes hence it is moresecured compared to WEP 64-bit. To enable WEP 128-bit, click here.
    Enabling WPA on the Router
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a type of wireless securitywhich is dynamic in nature. Meaning, it changes depending on the timerenewal you will specify. Hence, WPA is more secured compared to WEP.
    • Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (WPA-TKIP) – utilizes a stronger encryption method and incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers.
    • Advanced Encryption System (WPA-AES) – utilizes a symmetric 128-bit block data encryption
    To enable WPA, click here.
Enabling Wireless MAC Filter on the Router
Wireless access can be filtered using the MAC address of thewireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius. You caneither permit or prevent specific wireless computers access to yourwireless network.
To permit wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
To prevent wireless computers to connect to your wireless network, click here.
Disabling SSID Broadcast on the Router
Disabling the SSID broadcast is one way of securing your wirelessnetwork. This procedure will prevent other users from detecting yourSSID, or your wireless network name, when they attempt to viewavailable wireless networks in your area. For instructions, click here.

How to make it a secure network

Malicious users can easily capture information transmitted over an open wireless network. To prevent unauthorized access to your personal information it needs to be encrypted.

To secure your wireless network some kind of encryption must be enabled on that network, whether it is WEP, WPA-PSK (or MAC Access Control List). The most used method (and easiest to configure) is WEP.

    Configuring WEP:
    1. Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the Belkin wireless router.
    2. Open your web browser and type the router IP address of the router (by default, the address is in the address bar and press Enter.
    3. Click Login on the top of the page to login to the router. By default the Password is left blank, click Submit.
    4. Click Security under Wireless menu.
    5. Under Security, Select 64 bit WEP (or 128 bit WEP).
    6. Select Key 1 and enter any 10 hexadecimal digits - any combination of 0-9, A-F (26 digits if you selected 128-bit as the encryption strength). You may also enter a pass phrase and have the router generate a key for you.
    7. Apply the settings. Please write down the key – You will need it later to configure your wireless computers with the same key.
Any other questions, let me know.

The Access Point determines encryption. This is because the access point provides the path into the network. In infrastructure mode (all computers communicate through the access point) the AP is configured for 64- or 128-bit encryption. In 64-bit, WEP key 1 through 4 must be selected. In 128-bit, there is only one WEP key. The client computers must now be configured to the same WEP settings in order to connect to the network. If the WEP settings on a client are not correct, the client will show that it is connected to an access point, but no data can be exchanged, i.e.. no Internet browsing is possible, etc. 802.11b Ad-hoc differs only in that each computer must use identical WEP settings. There is no AP in the system to drive the WEP.
