I have contacted Archos and their automated service desk it sounds like my device needs a repair which is possible because it was working fine until a few days ago.
When I connect the device to the PC it does not show up an available drive and it does not appear in the Windows Media Console.
I have redormatted the hard drive but to no avail...
What do think..repair job.???
I've had a similar issue where I could not see it as a drive.
1st off, have you set it to be a hard drive?
If so, have you tried going into Disk Management on your pc to associate the drive with a drive letter?
Plug the Archos in and go to Start\run, type diskmgmt.msc and click ok.
I can't remember exactly what I did next once in there, but it would have been straight forward for me to be able to do it and now I can see the Archos every time with no problems.

You could contact Archos, but I gather their minimum cost for repair is $85. Plus shipping and parts. A suitable hard drive would probably be around $100. Amazon has a new Archos 7, 8gb wifi + 16GB microSD for around $200. While the memory is smaller it is more rugged and better suited than a hard drive for a portable device.
It is very possible the drivers conflict. You should try uninstalling everything to do with the one you don't want. Then install the drivers/software for the 700. Also what software are you using and what version? Thanks, Lee
I have a similar problem. I received my Archos 605 two weeks ago and thought the product was awesome. However, I had to call customer service for the plug-ins I was supposed to receive free. I was dropped twice after waiting for 12 - 15 minutes each time. On my third call, I finally received customer service after waiting an additional 12 minutes. The woman was very nice where she finally got me 6 of the 7 the rebate specified.
Today, 09/14/09, I had to call Archos for the broken screen which was a 20 minute wait. It is NOT under warranty and will cost me $155.00 plus shipping. I paid $154.99 total for the unit brand new.
Customer service stated sorry. DO NOT PURCHASE AN ARCHOS -- BY A IPOD. I HAVE LEARNED!
Go to settings and look under system.Then look where it says usb peference then see if it says windows media device if not change it to this and if that doesnt work try the other settings.If that doesnt work go to Archos.com and contact them and see what they can do.
if you are having technical problem with your archos 605 just do this connect your USB with your computer and your archos device will pop up on the screen asking you if you want to charge your device or enaable usb that will automatically appear if your computer doesen't reconise the device then switch it off and on again if doesen't work then i suggest you look it up on the archos manual which is located on your device. if that doent work then i think you may need to update your computer it must have windows Core dual processor if that don't work and your archos device doesent appear then i think you may need to update your computer with a service pack 2 installation cd
hitesh_rao - the reset button is at the bottom by the USB and docking ports. Tiny hole, need a pin or paper clip. Once pressed, just switch it back on.
This may be a stupid question, but when trying to configure the TV IR controller function and entering the relevant codes for my TV's, it asks 'did the TV switch off = Yes/No?'
None of my TV's switch off and then I cannot go any further with the config. Is this right? I have logged this with Archos FOUR times now, and they just respond with 'the controller does not control your TV'. I am fully aware that it is not a TV controller, but then why does it want to switch off my TV during the config? I just want them to answer that question.
Somebody please help!
