Question about RCA D52W20 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Convergence Problem The symptoms are the TV will start up perfect everytime but the convergence is off a lot on the sides (pincusion). I can get into the service settings and manually configure the convergance so that the picture looks pretty good in standard definition but when in High definition I can only stretch the green out to about 75% of the total screen size. Red and Blue I am able to stretch to full screen. Under the service menu I can't change any of the geometry settings. I read that some possible problems could be CL230, RF009, RL231, IF001 along with the CL037, TL029 and DL032. I have also heard that it could be the convergence power board, but I am able to change the convergence for all colors just not all the way. Do I just need to change the focus on the front of the TV because of the new flyback? I haven't played with any of the hardware settings yet. Do I need to worry about damage caused stretching the convergence too much with the software adjustments? Thanks

No, How would I go about doing that and where is it located? Do I need an analog multimeter?

Where is the Pico Fuse Located? Are you referring to FL231?

Sorry for the confusion. It is a pincusion problem. The right and left sides bow in to the middle. I tried first using the 3 point convergence then moved to the 5 point and lastly the 15. I will double check the manual but I think that's how I was supposed to do it. Thanks

I just tried the service menu again and it looks like I can control everything except the EW Amplitude, H Amplitude and EW Trapezium. Everything else does appear to work but I didn't notice any difference with using the upper corner and lower corner functions either. Hope this helps.

First of all, if you have changed the convergence values via teh service menu, you now need to perform a complete convergence alignment procedure as shown in the service manual. These adjustments MUST be done in a particular order or you will never achieve true convergence.

You speak of two different problems here as well. If the bowing comes from the top and bottom toward the center, it is a convergence problem. If the bowing is from the sides toward the center, it is a pincushion problem. Which do you have?

Update this and I'll provide you with the parts to check.

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks for the update. The convergence adjustments won't help you at all. I'll look up the model and get you the parts to check. You most likely have a bad capacitor in the pincushion circuit. I'll try to get you the part value and designation.

You should be able to adjust the focus with out damaging the internals just becareful not to have any clothing on that will contain a static charge(this will fry your main board) if you are able to adjust the blue and red chances are your board is not the problem.

Picture is bowed at top and bottom picture perfect in middle of screen; colors seperating in corners convergrence is perfect

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

You have a bad sensor, a bad digital convergence board, or the new board is not working correctly. I would start by swaping out the convergence board or exchange it for another one. Good Luck

Pincusion/Convergence Problem

You can find some presets on the display section of the motherboard. You try adjust to fine tune the picture.

Keep a mirror in front of the TV and try adjust the presets slowly with the help of a properly insulated screw driver.

Caution TV venerates very high voltages.

The blue color sags in regular tv but is fine in hd

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

You probably have a problem with your convergence board. Try resetting the convergence manually on your TV - go to Philips website for instructions on doing this if you have lost the Quick Start Guide. If the manual convergence fails, then your convergence board needs to repaired or replaced.

Zenith 46" with a "hour-glass" picture.

If the hour glass figure is a seperation of colors that appear to be convegence mis aligned, then, the convergence ICs would be the problem. If the picture is clear and you have a bending on the sides then the pincusion circuit in the horizontal circuit is where to look. Be careful of this circuit, it does control the high voltage. The only way to have a board checked is to have an Authorized Service Center look at it. It does, however, sound like there is a cold solder joint in the power supply that has gradually opened up and now is permanantly open. Call Zenith (LG) to see who they recommend.
