Question about Magicard Avalon Duo Thermal Card Printer

Getting it ready for printing

Keep trying to set the ribbon tight, but every time i close the lid it starts winding ribbon and errors out... we've always had to do this, but it's always worked after a few to several trys...

is there a best way to do this?

Hi There,

There is no need to set the ribbon tight. This will be re-initialised each time the lid is closed or the printer boots from being switched on.

The error message and number is important. Depending on which driver you have installed, you may not see the error message on the status monitor. However you need to know what the error is, and most importantly, the error code (04:??).

To see what the error is follow these instructions;

Switch on the printer and let it try to initialise. When it errors and the Red LED is flashing,
Download and install the Magicard Support Utility (V3.14).

Run the Magicard Support Utility. Select 'USB' for the comms port. When the other tabs open up, select 'Query Printer'. Click the 'Query' button. The left-hand pane will display the result of the query.
About a third of the way down is the 'Last Error Reported' line.

What is the last reported error (and crucially the error number)?

From this I should be able to tell you what to check.

    Hi There,



    Sorry, but I thought I would get a reminder if you posted a comment! I see you added the query information the next day. Sorry for the delay.



    The error number 07:03 indicates that the printer has not identified which dye film is in the printer.

    It does this by reading the barcode on the clear spool. The barcode sensor is at the bottom of the rear left-hand dye film clip. Please chech that the metal cover with the thin slot in it is clean.

    Check also that the barcode on the clear spool of the dye film is not damaged or obscured in any way.



    I checked the warranty status of your printer and it is still under warranty until 13.11.2008.

    I assume since the warranty is one year that this printer is neither within Europe or the USA?



    If necessary, it can still be returned to Magicard for repair under the warranty.



    It would be worth contacting Magicard directly, as we could probably resolve your issue much faster.

    While you are waiting for a response, I would try updating the firmware to the latest version which is currently V3.18. You can download this here;

    To install the firmware, just make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the PC. Then run the update utility downloaded above. Click 'Update', and about 20 seconds later the printer will re-initialise with the new firmware version.

The red triangle light with the "!" in it keeps flashing. I've just printed some things off but now it's not printing. Need it to print obviously..


ATTENTION light(triangle): Indicates that the print-cartridge door is open, print cartridge is missing, and other errors.

If ATTENTION and READY light is blinking:

Printer initialization
The printer is initializing.
No action is necessary.

Cleaning mode
A cleaning page is printing.
Wait until the cleaning page has finished and the printer is in the Ready state.
This could take up to two minutes.

If ATTENTION and READY light is on:

Fatal error
Turn off the printer, and then unplug the printer power cord for 30 minutes.
Plug the printer power cord into the power outlet, and then turn the printer on.
If the error persists, replace the printer.

If ATTENTION light is blinking and READY light is off:

  1. Attention: door open, no print cartridge, or media jam
The printer is in an error state that requires operator intervention.
Check the following:
? The print cartridge door must be completely closed.
? The print cartridge is correctly installed.
? There is no media jam.

2. Out of memoryThe printer is out of memory.
The page you are printing might be too complex for the printer's memory capacity.
Try lowering the resolution.

My printer has stopped printing the letters onto the dvd properly


1. Remove lid/top
2. Move blue lever left or right to unlock ribbon roll
3. Loosen ribbon or tighten as needed -
NOTES: If ribbon roll is too tight it will show wrinkles; it should look smooth if positioned correctly; if too tight it will not print portions of some letters; keep re-positioning if this does not work after first try.
4. Use flat-head screw driver to adjust front uptake (used) ribbon-roll as needed to make it smooth too. Lift out & re-position, if you need to.

Error / Ribbon Jam/Broken


When you open and close the lid on this printer, it tries to realign the ribbon. If you are getting this error, I suggestion you Calibrate the print ribbon through the print driver printing preferences on the Calibrate tab.

Zebra ZM600 - ribbon in error


Make sure the ribbon sensor is in the proper position and that there is nothing covering it, like a piece of label that came off and got stuck to the sensor. Here is a picture of where the sensor is located. Did you make sure you put the ribbon sensor plate back in? If not you will get this message. Make sure the Print Method is correctly set! Although I exclusively use Thermal-Transfer (ribbon is loaded along with label stock) my 140xIII had Print Method set to Direct-Thermal and printed labels just fine. The only problem I could see was that the Ribbon In warning would not go away.
After changing the Print Method the warning went away and printing continues as before

ZM400 printer


Try going through the LCD menu and if it say "Direct Thermal" change it to "Thermal Transfer", Direct Thermal made means, no ribbon required, but it sounds like you do have ribbon in the printer, if so, try my recommendation. If it asks for a password, it's '1234'.

Zebra 2824 red light


Hold the feed button while turning on the printer. After a config label prints, turn the printer off and then on again, and try printing again.

Also, make sure the lid is closed far enough to engage the lid sensor. If the red light comes on again, press down a bit on the lid, hit the feed button and try to print again.

Printer prints too light and not threw all copies of form


If you lift the lid open do you see a lever to adjust the printer head closer to the paper?

Printer cover open error message


I had that problem too.

Unplug the printer.
Hold the printer cover open while you plug in the printer.
Then wait for the printer to power on while still holding the cover open.
Then close the cover.
The buttons should work and th error message should be gone.

It worked for me.
