Question about Belkin PC Desktops

I have two computers that I want to share my cable internet connection. When connected directly to the modem the first computer conects to teh internet fine. But when I connect the computer to my Belkin wireless G router and the router to the modem it does NOT connect.

Perhaps one of your ethernet cables is bad?

When everything is connected, the "WAN" light on your router should go on, as well as the lights for whatever network connections your are using for your computer.

Obviously the cable that you used to connect your computer directly to the modem is working, so try replacing the other one.

My computer seems to disconnect the internet


Wireless or Hard Wired internet connection ?

When you set up a dial-up Internet service connection on your Windows computer, it comes automatically configured to disconnect itself after a predetermined period of inactivity.


This means that if you walk away from your computer and forget that you're online, your internet connection will automatically shut itself down.


If this feature isn't as helpful as you assumed it would be, you can turn it off using the Network and Sharing Center.

Click "Start."


Click "Control Panel."

Click "Network and Sharing Center."


Click "Change Adapter Settings."


Right-click on your dial-up Internet service icon.

Click "Properties."


Clear the check box next to the "Auto Disconnect" listing on screen.

Click "Apply."


The auto disconnect on your computer Internet service connection is now turned off.

Slow computers that persistently disconnect from Internet access may have issues with the wireless setup or if on a wired connection, there may be a problem with the Ethernet cable or port.

Troubleshooting connection and speed issues can save money rather than taking the computer to a technician or repair shop.


Additionally, some firewalls and security features can make it difficult to access certain types of websites.


Before spending money to have the computer diagnosed, try running through the most common, basic causes of connection issues.


Consider the type of site you are trying to access.

High-traffic sites such as gaming sites can sometimes be affected by high volumes of users accessing or attempting to access the site at once.


Test this by attempting to access the site at different times during the day and evening; peak hours for games that typically appeal to children may be during the afternoons on weekdays while games for older or more mature audiences will see high traffic at night.


Check your Internet connectivity and determine whether you are using a wired or wireless connection.

In the lower right side of the computer screen there should be an icon displaying the Internet or network connection.


Wireless connections are displayed with connection bars similar to those seen on cell phones while wired connections may show the end of a plug next to a monitor icon.


Reset the router if using a wireless connection.


For most home routers you simply unplug the power cord from the router box, wait a moment and plug it back in.


You may have to restart your computer to reestablish a secure connection.


Access the router through the computer and check for updates. Some routers offer firmware updates that fix some connectivity issues.


While updating the router, check for Internet browser updates as well as any critical updates for your computer's operating system.

Verify the computer uses the most up-to-date version of the Web browser available.


Try a different browser. Internet Explorer is the most commonly used Web browser, but not always the best for every site.


Try downloading another Web browser such as Firefox, Opera, or Google Chrome and test the sites there.


If the connections are still disconnected and the Internet speed seems slow, it may be an Internet issue.


Wired Connections


Trace the Ethernet cable from the Internet modem to the computer if using a wired connection.


Unplug the end of the Ethernet cable and check that the plastic head is secure and that there is a click when you return the plug to the modem; do the same on the computer end.


Inspect the Ethernet cable carefully as it runs from the modem to the computer.

If the cable was tacked down with a staple gun or other attachment, check the cable to verify it wasn't accidentally pierced.


Additionally, check for bends, twists or worn areas along the cable.

Measure the length of the Ethernet cable.


In general, cables longer than 100 feet tend to receive poorer signal transmission.


If the cable is longer than 100 feet, replacing with a higher quality cable or moving the computer or Internet modem may resolve connection issues.

My computer is not connecting to my Dynex wireless router. I've called my locate cable subscriber and they told me that it's a router problem. I've disconnected the router several times and it shows that...


First off, verify that you can connect to your cable modem directly. After that, hook up your Dynex wireless router and reboot your cable modem. After this, directly connect your computer to the Dynex router (using a cable). If you cannot get an Internet connection, then there is some issue with your Dynex router configuration. It's possible that there might be an IP address conflict with the cable modem. It would be best to contact support for configuring the Dynex.

If you can connect to the Internet with your computer connected directly to the Dynex router, then there must be some router configuration problem affecting your ability to connect wirelessly. You'll have to check the configuration--might be a good idea to completely reset the router and start over. If that doesn't help, you should contact Dynex customer support, as each router has its own configuration specifics. Good luck.

My new pc Dell Inspiron desktop has no modem built in for dial-up internet connection. Im currently subscribing to a dial-up service provider on another pc, how do I connect to the same dial-up service...


You have to configure Internet Connections Sharing on the PC which has a dial-up service.
1. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network Connections, right click on dial-up.
2. Clik on Properties, click on Advanced tab.
3. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box

After that you must connect the other pc to this one via network cable.
If you don'y have network adapters you have to buy them.

Internet no longer working, but internal network is fine.


i agree with all the above.. it's definately clear as mud how the network is designed and or funtioning. The machines connected to the wireless d-link router.. are they via cat5 inthe wired ports or wireless ? is the server the machine thats connecting to the switch and wiress router and modem? i'd say reset all switches modems routers and machines.. shut them all down.. then fire the cable modem, then the wireless router then the desktop switch then the server, the workstations and the one lonely wireless.. run "ipconfig /all" on all machines and if they aren't all sharing common ips and access, provide the results here for further investigation.

assuming you have a wireless router, make sure you have purchased the correct one, as cable and dsl routers are different, as cable modems need to be connected to the router via a cable and dsl normally have a modem that can't be connected to a router, and you will require a modem/router.

You can only share a wireless connection when the line comes directly to the router and not through a pc, as the pc with the connection will have to always be on.

I can not get a connection to the internet


That's Ok.

Is your computer connected directly to the cable modem from comcast and what type of connection if it is?(USB or Ethernet/LAN-its look like a telephone chord for slightly larger) or are you using a router?

First thing that you need to check is the actual modem(box provided by comcast normally the brands are; arris, motorola, webstar, samsung or linksys. Make sure the LED light on the front of the modem that say's either Online/Ready/Cable/nternet is stable or solidly lit.

Go to Control Panel and look for Network and Internet or Network and Sharing Center, on the top left hand side you will find tasks, look for manage network connection and check if you have a local area connection, right click the icon and go to Status then Details. Check if you have an IPv4 IP address(58.x.x.x or 271.x.x.x or something like that) if the IPv4 show as 169.254.x.x(where x can be number s from 0 to 254) its an invalid IP or your computer is not getting any valid IP from Comcast.

I found this information on another site, but it may help.

Go into your airport utility and up at the top hit internet. Go to the DHCP and look at the DHCP lease. Mine was set up for one hour. I just set it up for 365 Days. So that means, in theory, I should stay connected and I would have to hit that Renew DHCP lease once a year. :-)
It has worked fine ever since.

L cannot run 2 compters at tihe or can L run on either one or the other.from the same modem?


  1. If using a dial up modem you would need to network the computers together with ethernet cards and a cross-over cat5e cable and set up shared internet connection. One would be a server and one a client server would have to be on all the time for client to access the net.
  2. If using broadband (DSL or Cable) you will need a router. Wired or Wireless. Connect modem to router, router to computers, re-boot the computers, then reboot the modem and router so the modem can assign IP addresses.
