Save all your files, your disk is risking to collapse at any time.
You cannot efficently run Vista on a 10 GB hard disk.
Minim efficient size it will be 40 GB or so.

Delete as many useless files as you can, use the hard drive cleaning tool that you find under all programs/accessories/system tools.

To save your file you can use the backup option in control panel, and save all files to an external USB stick or external hard drive or, do not use CD RW because the disk is full and there will be no space for disk image on hard drive.

If you want to keep using Vista I suggest replacing the hard drive for a bigger one.

What type of external hard drive can be added

The motherboard can only take 2 GB of memory. If you tried a larger memory stick in any slot, the motherboard will fail to recognize it. A larger hard drive or an external drive will only increase storage and page file capacity. This will not improve the performance of the computer. Memory caching to the hard drive is limited to the bus speed of the hard drive interface (much slower than the RAM).

The better option if you can offered it is a new computer, if you do any gaming. You are dealing with a 2.8 GHz CPU with a 400 MHz bus. The computer is probably fine for e-mail but video and gaming response will not improve.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Hard disk c drive is full

You will have to re-do your software Operating Software Windows and install it to D: as the primary drive. Why not just do a good cleaning of the main drive send anything over to D: that can be saved there and free up the primary drive making more room even better. Use the D: as a saving and use to gather all your goodies and take them off of the drive get rid of any unwanted software. Do a good cleanup I'm sure you will find lots of room once you do that. Just a suggestion!
That is what I do I have one for the operating system only primary C: and the other for things I wish to save to it that is bigger than the primary since all I will be doing is using the space on C: to just run Windows. Then anything else I save I either burn to a disk, slap it on a USB Stick or send it to a free 5 gig service thus illuminating clogging of my drives.
Most people do this when saving stuff they want to keep they get it off the primary drive in case of a crash. Again just a suggestion. John

NO ! I would like to know if I can install a

You can put whatever size hard drive you want in your pc....typically they do not come with operating systems on them when you buy them...they are blank....you can run it as a secondary drive with the one you are already running and use it for storage....Otherwise you will have to have xp installed for you....(more money) . You can not put 600 GB of memory or ram on a pc.....most pc's take up to 4 GB of ram....If you literally mean memory than that will be whatever size hard drive you purchase...Ram is random access memory and helps determine the speed of your pc. And yes it is always worth it to upgrade a pc, depending on how old it is.

Coppying speed is slow

in vista you need to change the remote differential compression.  Can be found in control panel?programs?windows settings I believe.  Turn it off.  As far as XP, sounds like a problem with the hard drive or memory.  I know of this issue in vista, but never ran into it with XP.

I have an ACER ASPIRE 5720 laptop - it is less than a year old and it is showing the memory is full - the memory is meant to be 32 GB and from what I can see from the programme menus there is less than 4...

Hi j0shuatsb,
Acer like many other manufactures seem to design their system to fail or have issues just after their 1 year warranty is up. Like other Microsoft windows operating systems, when you receive an error message that you're memory is full. This does not mean you have run out of RAM = memory. You're notebook can only run a max of 4GB of memory. The error message refers to hard disk drive space. Depending on you're operating system, windows will lock out so much drive space so it can move about. All notebooks also have a hidden partition which holds drivers & programs used in combination for running the system restore.
This hidden partition can range in size from 2GB up to 4GB.
This also lessens you're total hard disk drive space. Bottom line is there is nothing wrong with your memory.
What you need is a larger hard disk drive. Notice the Technical specifications from this link:
http://www.acer.co.uk/public/page9.do?sp=page4&dau34.oid=24360&UserCtxParam=0&GroupCtxParam=0&dctx1=17&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&ctx3=-1&ctx4=United+Kingdom&crc=512458878
It does not show what size you're SATA hard disk drive is.
Since you are still in warranty, now would be the time to increase you're drive size. On another note, if you're HDD is the standard 160GB than there is an issue with your current HDD.
Please run a full system virus scan.
Suggest you back up all you're personal data on to a DVD & run you're system restore CD including a format to help you regain you're HDD full space. A temporary fix would be to uninstall any non needed programs through Add/Remove programs. This should free up some space. Many Acer programs you do not use at all or need should be the first to go.
