Question about Toshiba RD-XS34 DVD Player/HDD Recorder

1 Answer

Time bar I have no knowledge of this machine at all. I know how to record my shows and how to watch them. My problem is that when I watch my shows now the little bar at the bottom of the screen (maybe called the time bar) does not show up. It use to show up showing the start time of the program, the end time, the time you are at in the watching of the show. There was also a display of the fast forward speed when you were pushing the fast forward button. Both of these no longer display. Any help would be appreciated. I called Toshiba and they told me I would have to send it in. I will live with it before I do that. Thank you.

How do I record a show using my DVR and i-Guide?

There are multiple ways to do this:
  1. Press the RECORD button on your remote control while watching a program to begin recording. An overlay will appear on your screen to let you know you have started recording.
  2. From the TV listings grid, highlight the show you want to record and press the Record button.
  3. From any program information screen, highlight the Record icon and press the OK/Select button on your remote to schedule a recording. Follow the on-screen prompts for additional recording options.
Manually schedule a recording for a specific time or channel:
  1. Press the MENU button on your remote control then select the DVR icon.
  2. Or, if available, press the My DVR button on your remote control.
  3. Select the start time, end time and day that you want to record.
  4. Press Confirm.
  5. In the channel list that appears, select the channel to record from.
  6. Select Record to confirm your settings or select Recording Options for additional options.

How to record from DVD to VCR

The simplest method to record VHS to DVD is to purchase a recorder which has both VHS and DVD. They are relatively inexpensive now. You simply connect the device to your television via coaxial or audio/video cables. Insert the VHS tape in one side and the blank DVD media on the other. Press record and soon you will be watching your old VHS tapes on your DVD player.

Digital convertor

Do you mean the Samsung DVD-VR500E? The following steps should work for most DVD recorders. (In the US, you use the AV Input with an RCA composite cable or the RF input.)

If you get a digital-to-analog converter (set top box) and your current antenna provides the OTA signal at your location, then yes you will be able to record a digital program. Connect the set top box to AV1 or AV2 (the SCART inputs). Then use the Input Sel (under PR mode) to select the input. (Alternatively, connect an RF modulator to get the signal to the coax input from the STB to the recorder.) See page 75 of the manual for the DVD-500E for details on setting the input for recording: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200410/20041023105238671_00500A-VR300E-XEU-E-B.pdf . Some DVD recorders only record on the TV (coax) input. In that case, you will need a set-top box with a RF out or an RF modulator but you can still record the digital program.

A dual tuner set top box will let you watch one program and record another if both the TV and the recorder are connected to the STB. If your TV has a digital tuner, you can split the incoming antenna signal to go to the set-top box and the TV. (Then you can also watch one program and record another.)

I prefer to use a switch instead of a splitter to reduce the signal loss. However, this forces me to record the program that I am currently watching. Since most of my recording is for time-shifting, this doesn't cause me a problem.

This site, http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/pages/products/stbs/stb_search_results.asp , has a list of reviews of set-top boxes for the UK. I know in the US, it is harder to find new converter boxes. However, they frequently show up in the used market as people replace their older TVs. This may apply in your region as well.

I hope this helps.

Can not stop scheduled TV recording to DVD by pessing the STOP button

This happens if you are watching the show live and recording at the same time.

Option 1
Try changing the channel. It will ask you if you want to stop recording and go to the other channel.

Option 2
Go to the list of recorded shows. You can delete the show you wanted to press stop during (it will still be recording). The show will be deleted and, therefore, recording will be stopped.

After a timed recording the DVD is showing blank

Try to scan the DVD data into your PC using the trial version of TMPGEnc v4.0 Xpress if this can't find structure data then the recorder must have set the leadin data to show blank.

Is it possible to record one show, while watching another ??

You need to put a cable splitter on the cable. One side goes to the TV. The other side goes to the recorder. The output of the recorder goes to one of the alternate inputs on the TV. Set the recorder for whatever channel you want to record using its internal tuner. Use the TV tuner to watch a show live. Later, set the TV input to whatever you connected the recorder output to and watch your recording. You will probably need to do this to see the recorder menu to set up the recording.

DVD recorder continually stuck on a loop trying to read disk.

Hi again

Well done!

I am so pleased to hear that you have restored the DMR E55 and for taking the trouble to let me know. It's always satisfying to achieve something like that and I guess you'll get even more pleasure from using it now than you did before. They are good machines and well worth the effort to keep them going.

Thanks again and kind regards

Can the Magnavox Dvd player/VCP DV200MW8 record shows onto VHS's

unfortunately the machine is not a recording machine IE: it is a player only. However in todays day and age you can pick up a good used one at the goodwill for around 10-20 bucks that can record. hook up is easy, one cable in one out and presto you can record on a blank tape. just remember the begining of a blank tape always has a few seconds of nothing on it so dont hit rec just as you are watching it start the machine about ten seconds early.
hope this was helpfull.
