Question about Whirlpool Dryers

Chronic problem, every 6 months or so the heat stops working. The drum turns, no heat. I remove the box that has the heat element in it & take it to my local fix it shop where they test it & usually it is one of the two thermostats that have blown. This time after replacing the two thermostats one week ago, the problem has re-occured. What else should I check before I take the heat box off again?

The dryer is not producing heat.


If the Drum is rotating and the Blower Motor is operating (meaning you can feel air moving in the Drum), then the likely culprit that is causing your lack of heat is the Heater Box. By box, that means a metal box that usually sits behind the drum containing a heating element that heats the air going into the drum. If this heating element is not working then, you heater box is at fault. Don't assume that the element is bad, more often than not is is a thermostat, switch, or perhaps a wire that is connected to the box. While the other electric components on your dryer operate at 125VAC, the heater box uses 220V AC. You will need to get a multitester to check continuity. On some models, you can access the box from the box, but on others you will have to remove the front door and take the drum and belt off (a pain in the neck to remove). Hope that helps.

Elite and Duet Dryer Heating Element Replacement


This advice explains how to replace the heating element on Whirlpool Duet, Kenmore Elite and Maytag Epic dryers.

1. UNPLUG the dryer before servicing. Dangerous voltage is still present inside the dryer even when it is turned off.

2. Open the door and remove the lint screen. IMPORTANT: You will not be able to remove the air blower cover with the lint screen in place.

3. Remove the lower toe panel directly below the door. The panel comes off by locating and removing the screws under the bottom front edge. With the screws removed, the panel will drop down, then come off. NOTE: Propping the front feet of the dryer up can provide you better access to the screws (a 2x4 works well for this).

4. Disconnect the auto dry sensor plug (usually yellow wires with a white plug to the right of the blower assembly) and any ground wires that may be connected to the front panel.

5. Remove the air blower cover by locating and removing the mounting screws. NOTE: This is a good time to clean the blower fan housing, squirrel cage motor and dryer interior cabinet.

6. Remove the top panel of the dryer by locating and removing the screws holding the panel in place in the rear of the dryer. With the screws removed, the panel will slide back, then come off.

7. Locate the two screws that hold the operator console in place. There should be one on each side under the top panel. Remove the screws and carefully lift the panel straight up. NOTE: You do not need to disconnect the ribbon cables. Carefully lay the console across the top of the dryer out of the way.

8. Disconnect the door switch connector plug and remove the dryer front panel by locating the four screws that hold it in place. Loosen the two screws along the bottom of the panel and leave in place. Remove the top two screws and lift up and turn the whole front panel slightly counter-clockwise to release the drum supports from the dryer drum. NOTE: Make sure the dryer door is closed when removing the front panel to avoid damaging the door hinges.

9. Remove the dryer drum. Reach in behind the air blower with both hands and pull the idler pulley to the right with your right hand to release the tension and remove the dryer belt from the drive motor. With the belt still looped around the drum, you can use it like a handle to lift the entire drum up and out of the dryer.

10. With the drum removed, the heating components can easily be accessed. The TCO and Hi-Limit Thermostat is located on the outside of the heater box on the left hand side. The TCO is located at the back of the dryer, while the Hi-Limit Thermostat is located adjacent to the heating element terminals.


11. The entire heating assembly is removed by disconnecting all the components leads, followed by loosening the heater box mounting screw. With everything disconnected, the entire box and components will come free and lift out of the dryer. NOTE: Make sure you properly label all wiring to ensure they are reinstalled correctly.

12. There are a couple of mounting screws on the side of the heater box that holds the heating element in place. With the screws removed, the heating element will slide out of the box. NOTE: Make sure you take any resistance readings with the component disconnected from the circuit to ensure accuracy. The TCO and Hi-Limit Thermostat will read something close to 0 ohms if GOOD. The Heating Element should read 9 to 13 ohms.

13. Insert new heating element into the heater box and align the screw holes. Replace any other defective components and reinstall heater box.

14. Reinstall dryer drum ensuring the back rim of the drum rests on the rear dryer drum supports. Make sure the belt is looped on to the drum with the ribbed side towards the drum.

15. Reinstall the dryer belt by releasing the belt tension pulley as listed above, then, with your left hand loop the belt over the drive motor pulley. Release the idler pulley making sure the belt rests on the drive motor pulley. You should feel the belt tighten with tension. If you need further clarification on how to properly route the dryer belt you can go to repairclinic.com and click on the "Repair Help" link at the top of the page. On the following page, locate the "Dryer Belt Diagrams" link under the Special Features section. Refer to diagram K.

16. Reinstall the front panel by turning it slightly counter-clockwise and aligning the front drum supports under the front of the drum. Once the supports are under the drum, turn the front panel clockwise and lift up, placing it on the bottom two screws. Reinstall and tighten the top two screws.

17. Reinstall the door switch connector plug and reinstall the operator console. Use caution not to put too much stress on the ribbon cables.

18. Reinstall dryer top panel.

19. Reinstall air blower cover and reconnect the auto dry sensor and ground wire.

20. Reinstall toe panel by inserting the top portion first and pushing up. Push lower portion of the panel in place and reinstall screws.

I know this may seem like a lot, but its actually fairly simple if you follow the steps provided. Read through everything before attempting any repairs. If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

it sounds like one of the coils on the heating element could be touching metal and grounding out constantly running until you shut it down manually,when the heater is on the timer doesn't move until the heat shuts off,then the timer advances,when the machine calls for heat again the timer stops and the heat comes back on,it does this until the timer reaches zero but in your case the heater isn't shutting down and is keeping the timer from advancing.the filter is on the top of your dryer so unplug it,pull it out remove the ventline from the back of the dryer and remove the back panel,you'll see the heating element on the right side,also with a meter check the thermostats on the heater box,when checking any part at least one wire has to be diconnected or you won't get a correct reading,check for continuity on all the parts on the heater box,when the dryer is running correctly say you have a blocked vent line,when the dryer starts running hotter than normal the thermal fuse or the high limit thermostat will pop,the thermal fuse is the white piece to the right of the lint filter duct and the hgh limit is the top thermostat on the heater box,but with the element grounding out nothing will shut it down until you manually cut the power by moving the timer to off,if it melted the baffle you could have damaged other parts like the motor,check the rear end of the drum and see if there's like yellow on it or lint stuck to it where it touches the back wall,if there is then the oil from the motor sprayed out and the motor could last for a week or 5 years but the overheating most likely damaged it,if the dryer is old you might want to think of buying a new dryer instead of repairing it and then you have problems with something else like the motor or changing out thermostats in a month or two but you have to make that call,good luck and let me know what you find

I don't know anything about dryers so please bear with me. My dryer drum turns, fan blows, but wont heat. replaced heating element. Still no heat. Has 124 volts on both prongs of element. What should i do?...


Have you tried flipping the breakers @ your electrical box? Mine will do that at time when one breaker has tripped. It will have enough juice to run it but not heat it. IF that doesn't work there may be a broken wire to the heating element or possibly even a faulty heating element. I'd try the breakers first though.(Im not a professional I've just been a single mom for 18 years and have found myself working on all sorts of things and gaining knowledge from hands on experience) Hope it helps & works.

Dryer drum turns, no heat, replaced thermal limiter


Your model which we call the 417, is not usually easy to work on. The heating element is located behind the dryer drum. The drum has to be removed to change the element. There is a lot involved but given the cost of a stack unit the element and labor may be worth it.

Electric dryer model LEB6300PW0 does not heat. No breakers tripped, drum turns, switches and timers work.


Pull the back panel off & remove the heating element. Examine the coils in the heating element. If some of the coils are burned through, you will need to changeout the heating element. The part costs about $65.00.

Thermal Fuse keep failing


Fuse and element failure is related to lack of air passing over the element. The drum and fan should run even if the heater is inoperative. Find out what is stopping them, then work on heat. If motor is running, there should be air flow--pull vent hose from wall outlet--should be brisk air flow. If not, remove the lint screen and check again. If now ok, soak the lint screen in hot water and detergent. If drum does not turn, check the drive belt and if it sits properly on motor pulley.

Dryer will not produce hot air. What could be the problem? I opened the back panel and there is a square shaped box that was hot. Is that the heat element?


The heating element should be nearly the diameter of the drum and is generally round. If the box of which you speak is about 4 to 6 inches square, it is probably an electrical connection box and shouldn't be getting hot. If this box has a removable cover, unplug the power cord and remove the cover--look for loose connections. If all ok, replace cover. Does the drum turn? Start the dryer and check for air blowing from the outside vent. If not, check for plugged lint filter (wash with hot water and detergent) and lint plugging the flex-hose between the dryer outlet and the outside vent. After running for a little while, feel the back of the drum to see if is generally hot--if so, then the heating element appears to be working. Hope this helps.

Ge dryer won't heat and is starting to make a sqeaking sound when


The most likely cause for the dryer having stopped heating is the heating element has stopped working and probably needs to be replaced. The "chirping" you are hearing is probably the nylon bearing the drum runs on. This is located in the back of the machine and goes right along with the replacement of the heating element. To disasemble the machine, you will need to loosen the two phillips head screws located at the bottom corners of the control panel as you face the machine. You will then moz-screenshot.jpgneed to carefully pry up the top assembly so that it is free of the front door panel. This will allow you enough room to reach down inide the machine and remove the screws holding the door panel to the rest of the frame. You should know the drum will need to be supported once the door assembly is removed. I usually lay the machine on its back at this point and reach inside the drum to remove the 4 screws holding it in place. Once this is done, remove the drum and set it aside. At this point you will be able to see the heating element and the drum bearing. You will have to stand the machine back up right in order to remove the screws holding the bearing in place. Reassemble in reverse order. You can find sites that have drawings by searching the web for appliance parts.

HEating element


The heating element is located in the bottom left corner. You will need to remove the drum for access. Once you have the drum out of the way, look for a square box with wires attached. There are 10mm fasteners that hold the heating element to the vent. Rome the screws, mark the wires and positions then remove the heating element. Before replacing the element make sure the thermal fuse and the high limit switches are not faulty.
