I've been wrestling with tw IBM's with similar issues for the last three days, one of which wouldn't recognize the hard drive or the CD drive. I'm going to suggest flashing the bios, this worked on the ones I have. Here's a link to the bios download. I recommend that you use the one for creating a diskette. Try this and let me know.

You will need to use a computer with a floppy drive, plus you will need a floppy drive for your laptop. Simply download the diskette version of the bios, then run it. When you run it, it will prompt you to put a disk in the A: or floppy drive, then it will create the disk for you. Then you will need to boot from the floppy drive, and it will install the fresh and updated bios. If you can't get a floppy drive for your laptop, then I suggest that you go ahead and make the disk, and take it to a local shop and have them flash the bios for you. Any decent shop should have the equipment to do this, and shouldn't charge much.

I recently had a problem where I could not Install win XP on an Hewlett Packard laptop computer. (Hard disk not found) error. I was downgrading the Vista System to Xp. I had to go to the bios setting and disable the sata hard drive setting and this solved my problem. I dont know if it will work for you. Try IBM support if its free!

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.

Upgraded hard drive, from 80gb to 250gb. I have had to reload my os twice. it appears that the bios is not recognizing my hd. a friend said that the inspiron 6000 does not do well with a hd bigger then...

I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive. For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.

I have thinkpad r50e with 20GB HD and I want to replace it with bigger one 160GB I know that IBM have a partition containing the XP installation how do I copy it to the new one?

You'll need some software that will do an exact copy of the hard drive. All the major players have it. You might want to look into some free alternatives.

This page has some great instructions with Partition magic.

You'll just need to plug in the upgrade using an external housing. You can get these from any computer store for $20-$50.

did you configure the 160GB hard drive as second???
there is a shorting pin between the ribbem cable and the power cable.
take a look on the hard drive, there should have adiagram shows where the shorting pin need to go to make it as secondary drive.
install the hard drive as secondary drive.
if you want the drive to be the primary. you nee to install the operating system on it.
with out operating system the machine will boot up in to DOS only, and a error message telling you the drive has no loader.
