Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Seagate 320GB I am running Win 98. When I hook up my seagate drive to the USB port I can not see the drive. I also have a laptop running 2000 Pro and it seams to work fine on it. I have searched for driver on the net but have had no luck. The Win 98 sys asks for me to insert the disk. do you have any suggestions.

It could be that it's formatted as NTFS, which Win 98 probably can't recognise. Problem is FAT 32 can't deal with drives over about 80 GB. There may be software patch out there to allow NTFS on Win 98, or (only solution I have used), you could format it as several partitions, including at least one FAT32 for your machine to see.

    Then have you found a Win 98 driver? USB mass storage devices generally need a driver for 98 SP2. I am not sure they will ever work on 98 SP1.

    Looks like Seagate do not support the FreeAgent on Win 98, but they used to make a 3.5" external USB drive, which is still supported for Win 98 - you could see if that driver will work

First thing to do is try a USB port on the back of your computer. Also try another computer to see if it is just a bad port.

There seems to be an incompatability. Some of those devices can only read up to a certain file size, like my friend has a digital photoframe that can only recognise up to 2GB. Also try not putting the files in folders and just having them all in the root directory

Win 98

Hi,

You would need two set of driver:
  • motherboard USB drivers;
  • mass storage driver from Seagate for Win98.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Windows 98 driver for FreeAgent

If your PC is still running Win98 then it probably has a USB version 1.0 port. I don't think the Faster USB version 2.0 devices will work properly even if you have the correct driver - i.e. you have a hardware version conflict. Try Purchasing a USB version 2.0 Daughter board for the PC and plugging the Seagate drive into that iinstead.
