I have a kia mentor with 46000 miles on the clock and the auto gearbox will not change up in to forth gear and the gear changes are not as smooth as i would exspect it to be i have how ever noticed that the engine management light has come on

If you Can Change Through Gears Manually The Cause Is A Modulator Or Connection to it On the Outside of the Trans.

Hi Haresh, It help to know if we're talking about automatic or manual? If it is the the select without clutch it would be a good idea to check the fluid levels. For auto or semi auto have the filter replaced inside the gearbox. If it is manual, have the clutch adjustment checked. Regards John

For most all timing belts, the 100,000 mile marker is when the belt should be changed. The belts are designed to work for 100+ thousand miles, but recommended checking/changing is at 100K miles.

could be a lead or plug breaking down which are the most obvious when under load ,but please explain why the transmission oil changed ?? i was always taught that auto boxes are for old women and the oil in them never needs changing .I have never seen this on any workshop manuals for the need to change the gearbox oil on a auto.

if you have recently done any work on your car that involves axle or halfshaft removal your axle may not be straight on the controll arm and it may be grinding against your transaxle side motor mount take off your tire and check to see if your axle rod is touching anything for further disassemble info go to autozone.com sign up its free then click on repair manuals you will find all of your info there....good luck

the problem sounds like mine i had all the fluid and filter in gearbox changed it sorted the problem out

Hi there. Although the Dealer has changed the oil, did they do a 'Stall Test' whilst the gearbox was cold and again when at normal running temperture? If not, that's what they must do firstly. This will identify whether you have a slipping clutch/s. The Honda autobox also includes what is known as accumulators - these control how each clutch is engaged during acceleration. For example, if you are accelerating slighly/smoothly, you want each gear to be engaged gently and smoothly, whereas, when accelerating hard, you need the gear engaged quickly and hard to aviod clutch slippage. Thus, the fact that you are experiencing a hard engagement might mean that an accumulator/s is seized. If that's the case, it will mean that the autobox will need stripping, cleaning and be checked for worn components. Hope this helps, Scottech.

Try adding a bottle of Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabiliser to the gearbox, it made hell of a difference to my Kia

I think he's referring to the valve body which is the hydraulic part of the gearbox assembly. Can only replace it.
